Shop Office Chair Refurbishment
The core steps of refurbishing shop office chairs include dismantling and cleaning old parts, repairing and sanding the frame, and painting or reupholstering. The cost ranges from 80 to 400 yuan depending on the material and craftsmanship. For complex structures or precious materials, consulting professionals is recommended.

Refurbishment Steps
Dismantling Old Upholstery and Cleaning If the chair surface fabric needs to be replaced, first remove the old fabric and clean up any remaining nails or glue to avoid scratching the surface during subsequent operations. At the same time, use a soft-bristled brush or a damp cloth to remove stains, dust, or old paint from the frame surface to ensure a clean base. If the chair has metal components (such as gas cylinders or swivel bases), check their stability to avoid affecting safety due to rust or looseness.
Frame Repair and Sanding Check the structural stability of the chair, focusing on repairing loose or cracked mortise-and-tenon joints and screw connections. For solid wood frames, use woodworking glue to reinforce the mortise-and-tenon joints and secure them with clamps until the glue is completely dry. For metal frames, tighten the screws or replace damaged parts. After repair, sand the frame surface with sandpaper (recommended 120-240 grit) to remove burrs and old paint residue, ensuring uniform adhesion of subsequent coatings.
Painting or Reupholstering
- Painting: Choose an environmentally friendly wood finish (such as water-based paint) and apply it in 2-3 thin coats, with an interval of 2-3 hours between each coat to avoid cracking due to excessive paint thickness. When painting, follow the direction of the wood grain to ensure even color. If color adjustment is needed, test the paint in a concealed area first and proceed with large-scale application only after confirmation.
- Reupholstering: Choose durable fabric (such as canvas or polyester) and cut it about 5 centimeters larger than the frame size, leaving room for fastening. Secure the fabric with a pneumatic stapler or manual U-shaped staples, stretching it from the center to the edges to ensure a smooth and wrinkle-free surface. If the chair has a foam cushion layer, wrap it with new foam before covering it with fabric to enhance comfort.
Refurbishment Costs
- Ordinary Materials: For solid wood chairs with replaced seat surfaces and woven rattan, the labor and material costs are approximately 80-150 yuan. If structural reinforcement or replacement of mortise-and-tenon joints is required, the cost may increase to over 200 yuan.
- Precious Materials: Fine processing of materials such as rosewood or old elm wood costs 200-400 yuan per chair. The cost is higher if carving repairs or special finishes are involved.
Precautions
- Complex Structures: If the chair involves gas cylinders, swivel bases, or genuine leather materials, it is advisable to consult professional repair personnel first to avoid air leaks, jamming, or leather damage due to improper operation.
- Ventilation and Drying: After refurbishment, ventilate the chair for more than 24 hours to ensure that paint or glue odors completely dissipate before use, avoiding inhalation of harmful gases.
