Shanghai Humanscale Office Chair

Admin October 12, 2026

Humanscale is an ergonomic office product brand from the United States. Its office chair products have been used in some office areas in Shanghai, but there have been some usage feedback issues. Currently, some models are being replaced, and there is circulation in the second-hand market. Here is a detailed introduction:

Brand Background: Humanscale is an American manufacturer of ergonomic office products, founded by Robert King in 1983 and headquartered in New York. The brand focuses on designing ergonomic seating and office tools, with products including office chairs, monitor arms, sit-stand desks, and task lights.

Well-known Models and Usage Feedback: The Humanscale World is a relatively well-known office chair model from the brand, with a retail price of around 8,000 yuan. It was once the standard office chair in office areas such as ByteDance's Shanghai Xinjiangwan. However, some employees have reported issues, such as the backrest being unable to 'lock' and not remaining stable at the set angle during use, which may affect the user's comfort and work efficiency. Additionally, there is insufficient support for the waist and head, making it difficult to provide adequate support for those who need to sit for long periods and have high requirements for waist and neck support. Prolonged use may lead to physical fatigue and discomfort.

Replacement Situation: From August 2026 to the second quarter of 2027, ByteDance plans to gradually replace the Humanscale World in Shanghai and other locations with the domestic Qingxian S1 office chair. This replacement plan may be based on considerations of employee usage feedback, as well as a comprehensive assessment of factors such as office costs and product performance.

Second-hand Market Situation: Currently, the replaced Humanscale World second-hand chairs have entered the market, with the standard model (white frame + leather-covered foam seat cushion) priced at around 260 - 350 yuan. However, these second-hand chairs also have some drawbacks, such as a small recline angle, which limits the user's ability to adjust their posture during rest, and the foam seat cushion can be stuffy in summer, affecting comfort.
