Sewing Methods for Office Chairs
Admin October 11, 2026
Sewing an office chair requires selecting a repair or complete sewing process based on specific needs. Common methods are divided into two categories: back-cover repair and leather cover sewing, with operations needing to be combined with material characteristics and strictly follow process standards.

I. Sewing Repair for the Back Cover of an Office Chair
Suitable for repairing local damage (such as broken threads or cracked leather), with core steps as follows:
- Tool and Material Preparation
- For ordinary fabric: Choose sewing thread that closely matches the color of the original material and prepare basic sewing tools.
- For leather material: Professional leather sewing tools are required (such as leather-specific needles, awls, presser feet, etc.), along with nylon or polyester thread that matches the color of the leather to ensure strength and aesthetics.
- Sewing Operations
- Broken Thread: Directly use a needle and thread to mend along the break, controlling the stitch spacing to 3-5 millimeters to avoid secondary cracking due to excessive looseness.
- Cracked Leather: First, use an awl to punch holes along the edge of the crack (with a hole spacing of about 2 millimeters), then sew with a "double-thread cross-stitch" to ensure even stress on the leather; if the cracked area is large, a leather repair patch can be applied before sewing.
- Subsequent Treatment
- After repair, allow it to dry for at least 24 hours (leather material should avoid direct sunlight), and keep the environment clean during this period to prevent dust or oil stains from contaminating the repair site.
II. Complete Sewing Process for Seat Leather Covers
Suitable for making new leather covers or overall replacement, requiring strict adherence to industrial standards, with steps as follows:
- Pattern Making and Cutting
- Use the shape of the foam as a basis to make a non-woven fabric pattern, reserving a 1-centimeter seam allowance (for subsequent sewing). After cutting the leather, sand the edges to prevent fraying.
- Mark key positions (such as the installation location of the card strip and the zipper opening) to ensure precise subsequent processing.
- Processing and Sewing
- Enhancing Comfort: Add cotton layers of different thicknesses (such as 3-millimeter sponge) under the leather surface, and fix them by high-temperature ironing to enhance the softness of the seat.
- Sewing Standards: Use an industrial sewing machine (adjust the presser foot pressure for leather material), maintain a 1-centimeter seam width, and control the stitch length to 4-5 millimeters; use fixtures to fix the leather during sewing to avoid misalignment.
- Decoration and Fixation
- Press decorative lines: Choose single lines (for a simple style) or double lines (to enhance the three-dimensional effect), or install plastic press strips to improve the texture.
- Install the card strip and zipper: Fix the card strip (used for connecting to the chair frame) at the reserved position, and the zipper should be installed in reverse (with the opening facing inward) to hide the stitches.
- Final Inspection
- Confirm that there are no skipped stitches, wrinkles in the leather, or loose installation of the card strip before delivering it to the covering process.
Precautions:
- Leather material must use specialized tools. Ordinary fabric can be sewn by hand directly, but ensure even stitches.
- The operating environment should be dust-free and dry to avoid scratches from oil stains or sharp objects on the material.
- The sewing of the leather cover must strictly follow the pattern dimensions. An error exceeding 2 millimeters may cause difficulties in covering and require rework and adjustment.
