Sewing Office Chair Cover

Admin October 11, 2026

Sewing an office chair cover can be achieved through two methods: making a basic cover and creating a detachable backrest cover using scrap fabric. Details are as follows:

Making a Basic Cover

First, find a piece of paper of an appropriate size and lay it flat along the edge of the office chair seat, ensuring that the paper fully conforms to the shape of the seat. Then, use a pen to trace the outline along the edge of the seat and cut out the paper pattern after drawing. At this step, try to ensure that the cut-out paper pattern matches the shape of the seat edge as closely as possible to ensure that the subsequently made cover fits the seat better.

Next, place the cut-out paper pattern on the prepared fabric and expand outward by 1 inch or 1.5 inches from the edge of the paper pattern. This expanded size is to leave space for hemming the edge of the cover and inserting elastic bands. After expanding the size, hem the edge of the fabric. The width of the hem should be even to ensure the aesthetics and durability of the cover.

Finally, insert an elastic band into the hemmed edge of the fabric. The length of the elastic band should be determined according to the circumference of the seat to ensure that the cover fits tightly on the seat after insertion but is not so tight that it is difficult to put on or may damage the cover. After inserting the elastic band, tie the two ends tightly, and a basic office chair cover is completed.

Creating a Detachable Backrest Cover Using Scrap Fabric

Step 1: Find a piece of fabric large enough and drape it over the backrest of the office chair. Leave an opening at the widest part of the backrest. This opening is for conveniently putting the backrest cover on the backrest. If there is excess fabric above the opening position, cut it off and sew up the cut edge to prevent the fabric from unraveling.

Step 2: Lay the fabric flat and align it with the edge of the backrest. Check again for any excess parts. If there are any, cut them off and leave a seam allowance. Then, sew all the parts that need to be sewn and make marks at appropriate positions for subsequent installation of Velcro or other fastening devices.

Step 3: Start stitching from the bottom hem. Fold the hem after hemming it and sew from the inside. When reaching the end of the stitching, make several extra lock stitches. This can prevent the cover from being pulled apart during use and increase the firmness of the backrest cover.

Step 4: If using Velcro for fastening, attach the fuzzy side to the reverse side of the backrest cover and the prickly side to the front side. When installing the Velcro, pay attention to leaving a certain amount of thickness to ensure that the Velcro can stick and separate normally and also ensure the fit between the backrest cover and the backrest.
