Self-Welded Office Chair

Admin October 16, 2026

A self-welded office chair can be made by cutting, welding, and assembling square tubes or stainless steel tubes. The operation is simple and cost-effective. Here are the specific steps:

Material Preparation

Preferably choose 20mmร—20mm square tubes or stainless steel tubes due to their lightweight nature, ease of cutting, and high strength, making them suitable for beginners. Square tubes are more cost-effective and easier to weld, while stainless steel tubes offer better corrosion resistance but at a slightly higher cost. You will need a home welder (arc welding or MIG welding), cutting tools (grinder or saw), protective gear (gloves, face shield), and screws or bolts for securing components.

Dimension Design and Cutting

  1. Structural Planning: The chair frame includes four legs, a seat support, and a backrest.
  2. Reference Dimensions: Leg length of 45cm, seat dimensions of 40cmร—40cm, and backrest height of 40cm.
  3. Cutting Requirements: Use tools to precisely cut the materials, ensuring flatness of the components; mark and drill holes (for bolt connections) to simplify subsequent assembly.

Welding Process

  1. Securing the Legs: Weld the four legs to the seat support frame, ensuring vertical alignment. First, use tack welding for temporary fixation, then reinforce with full welding to prevent deformation during the welding process.
  2. Attaching the Backrest: Weld the backrest support to the rear of the seat at an angle of approximately 100 degrees to conform to ergonomic design and enhance comfort.
  3. Structural Inspection: After welding, test the stability, focusing on checking for cold welds or deformation. Beginners are advised to use square tubes first, as they have a lower melting point and are safer to operate.

Finishing and Safety Considerations

  1. Detailing: Grind the welds to remove burrs and apply anti-rust paint to enhance durability; test the load-bearing capacity (recommended load of over 80kg) to ensure safety.
  2. Safety Points:
    • Maintain ventilation during welding to prevent inhalation of fumes;
    • Wear protective gear (gloves, face shield) throughout the process to avoid burns;
    • Clean up the site and store tools properly after completion.

The entire process takes about 2-3 hours, and the cost can be controlled within 100 yuan. This method is suitable for individuals with strong hands-on skills and requires strict adherence to operating procedures to ensure the quality of the finished product.
