Seat Depth of Office Chairs

Admin October 16, 2026

The seat depth of an office chair refers to the length of the chair's seat cushion from front to back. An appropriate seat depth is crucial for comfort during prolonged sitting.

Impact of Inappropriate Seat Depth If the seat depth is too deep, the back of the knee will get stuck at the edge of the seat cushion, obstructing blood circulation in the legs. At the same time, it will be difficult to lean naturally against the backrest, forcing the body to lean forward or leaving the lower back unsupported. Long-term use may lead to excessive pressure on the lumbar spine. If the seat depth is too shallow, the front part of the thighs will be unsupported and suspended in the air, with the body's weight concentrated on the ischial tuberosities of the buttocks, resulting in poor local blood circulation. Usually, after sitting for half an hour, symptoms such as numbness in the buttocks and back pain will appear.

Appropriate Seat Depth Standards Scientific measurements indicate that the ideal seat depth should be 5-6 cm shorter than the length of the user's thighs. The specific measurement method is as follows: When sitting upright, subtract 5-6 cm from the vertical distance from the back edge of the buttocks to the back of the knee to obtain the suitable seat depth value. This design ensures that the front two-thirds of the thighs are fully supported by the seat cushion, while allowing the calves to bend naturally and the soles of the feet to touch the ground steadily, forming an ergonomic sitting posture.

Seat Depth Ranges for Different Types of Office Chairs The seat depth of ordinary backrest chairs is usually between 34-42 cm, suitable for most people of medium stature. Office chairs with armrests have a slightly increased seat depth of 38-45 cm to accommodate arm movement space. Sofa-style office chairs, which emphasize relaxation, can have a seat depth of up to 48-50 cm, but they need to be used in conjunction with the backrest tilt angle. It should be noted that these values are only reference ranges, and the actual choice should be based on the user's height proportion.

Importance of Adjustable Seat Depth Due to significant differences in individual leg lengths, chairs with a fixed seat depth are difficult to meet diverse needs. Office chairs with adjustable seat depth (usually allowing a 5-8 cm adjustment range through slides or buckles) enable users of different heights to find the optimal support point through adjustment. For example, those over 180 cm tall can adjust the seat depth to the maximum value, while those under 160 cm can adjust it to the minimum value. This personalized adaptation can significantly improve comfort during prolonged sitting, especially for those who need to work at a desk for long periods.
