Sawing Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

When sawing an office chair, appropriate methods should be selected according to the specific components. Here are the sawing operations and precautions for different components:

Shortening Chair Legs

  • Determining the Shortening Length: According to ergonomics, the standard seat height for an adult chair is 400 - 500mm. When sitting, the feet should be flat on the ground, and the thighs and calves should form an approximate 90ยฐ angle. Use a ruler to measure the difference between the existing height and the target height. Mark the cutting lines on each chair leg with a pencil, ensuring that the marked lines are at the same height from the ground.
  • Selecting and Using Tools: Hand saws are suitable for wooden chair legs. Solid wood chair legs are prone to cracking at the end face if not properly treated after being shortened. Metal chair legs (such as carbon steel) require saw blades designed specifically for metal (such as hacksaws). After sawing, the sawed edges should be polished and anti-rust treatment should be applied, such as painting with anti-rust paint. For high precision, a table saw with an angle fence can be used for cutting.
  • Special Considerations for Different Materials: Solid wood chair legs are sensitive to moisture and can easily deform when exposed to humidity or dryness. Metal chair legs have special requirements for sawing.
  • Post-Sawing Treatment: Install anti-slip and silent foot pads, which are usually made of rubber or silicone. They can cushion impacts, prevent slipping, reduce noise, and protect the floor. Installation is simple; they can be directly slipped on or attached with adhesive backing.

Sawing the Axle in the Middle of the Office Chair's Universal Wheels

  • Sawing One Side of the Wheel Axle: Use an appropriate sawing tool (such as a hacksaw) to accurately saw the cutting position, avoiding damage to other parts of the wheel.
  • Handling the Other Side of the Axle: After sawing one side and attempting to remove the wheel axle, if the other end is a long axle and it is difficult to pry out, you can choose to saw it. When sawing, control the force and direction to prevent the saw blade from slipping and injuring yourself or damaging the wheel.
  • Installing New Wheels: Prepare new wheels and corresponding screws. Align the new wheel with the installation position, pass the screw through the center hole of the wheel and the installation hole at the bottom of the chair, and tighten the screw with an appropriate screwdriver or wrench to ensure that the new wheel is firmly installed.

Shortening Aluminum Alloy Chair Legs

  • Preparing Tools and Materials: Hand saws or electric saws (hand saws are suitable for small projects, while electric saws are suitable for large projects but require more safety measures), metal saw blades suitable for aluminum alloys, pliers, safety gloves and goggles, pencils, and steel rulers.
  • Shortening Steps: Measure the length to be sawed off, and mark it on the chair leg with a pencil and steel ruler. Fix the chair leg with pliers. Place the saw blade at the marked position and start sawing. Apply force rhythmically when using a hand saw, and ensure stability when using an electric saw. Check the cutting line repeatedly. Polish the edges with a file or sandpaper to make them smooth and free of burrs.
  • Precautions: Safety comes first. Wear gloves and goggles before sawing. Select saw blades suitable for aluminum alloys. Fix the chair leg. Reserve extra length at the marked cutting position for fine-tuning. Polish the edges.
