Saddle-shaped Office Chair

Admin October 13, 2026

The saddle-shaped office chair is a seat designed based on ergonomic principles, optimizing sitting posture by mimicking the riding position to reduce the negative impact of prolonged sitting on the body.

Design Principles and Functional Features

The core design inspiration for saddle chairs comes from the natural posture when riding a horse, with the key being to adjust the pelvic tilt angle and leg support. The hip joint angle is a crucial parameter: through the special curvature design of the seat, the user's hip joint can maintain a natural bend of about 135 degrees, an angle proven to effectively reduce lumbar pressure and maintain the physiological curvature of the spine. Meanwhile, the "saddle-shaped" structure of the seat encourages the thighs to naturally separate by 45 degrees, with the pelvis automatically tilting forward, avoiding the pelvic retroversion and hunchback issues caused by traditional seats.

Compared to ordinary chairs, saddle chairs can open the hip joints by an additional 20 degrees, an adjustment that improves lower limb blood circulation and reduces numbness caused by prolonged sitting. Their structure is divided into two types: single-petal and double-petal. The single-petal design is simple, but the double-petal design offers superior comfort by independently supporting both sides of the buttocks, making it more widely used.

Applicable Scenarios and Usage Requirements

Saddle chairs are suitable for a wide range of scenarios, including medical, office, industrial production, and home environments. In office settings, they are particularly suitable for groups that require prolonged desk work, such as programmers and designers. However, it should be noted that saddle chairs need to be used with a desktop height of no less than 80 centimeters to ensure that the arms can naturally hang down and comfortably operate the keyboard and mouse, avoiding shoulder and neck fatigue caused by a low desktop.

Historical Development and Brand Distribution

The design of saddle chairs can be traced back to the Cab chair series launched by Italian designer Mario Bellini in 1977. This series adopted a metal frame and saddle leather structure, incorporating the concept of fitting the human body's curves into seat design for the first time and winning multiple international design awards, becoming the prototype of modern saddle chairs.

With technological development, saddle chairs have gradually differentiated into high-end and affordable markets: brands such as Salli from Finland and HAG have launched high-end models with complete functions, emphasizing material durability and adjustment flexibility; at the same time, a large number of low-cost alternatives have emerged on the market to meet basic usage needs.

Usage Precautions

Initial use of a saddle chair requires an adaptation period of 1-2 weeks. As the sitting posture changes from "passive support" to "active balance", users may feel soreness in the waist or thigh muscles, which is a normal reaction as the body adjusts to the correct posture. It is recommended to use the chair in stages each day, gradually extending the sitting time until fully adapted.
