Rough-Material Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

A "rough-material office chair" generally refers to an office chair made with relatively ordinary or low-cost materials. Its materials and design focus on simplifying processes and controlling costs, but may sacrifice some comfort and durability.

Material Characteristics

  1. Metal Components: The chair legs and armrests are often formed from thinner metal tubes (with a thickness ranging from 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm). Some designs simplify costs by using a point-tube structure. These metal tubes have limited strength and may deform or produce unusual noises over time due to weight-bearing or frequent movement.
  2. Mesh Fabric: The mesh fabric used for the backrest or seat cushion is often made of ordinary polyester, which has poor resilience. It easily leaves indentations when pressed and is difficult to restore automatically. Long-term use may lead to localized sagging, affecting support.
  3. Fillings: The internal fillings are mostly ordinary sponge or wooden boards, with a relatively thin thickness (usually less than 5 cm), offering limited comfort. Ordinary sponge tends to lose elasticity under long-term pressure, while wooden boards may cause fatigue from prolonged sitting due to a lack of cushioning.
  4. Plastic Components: Some low-cost office chairs use plastic materials for the backrest, armrests, or base. Although lightweight, these plastics have low strength and are prone to cracking or deformation from impacts or high-temperature environments.

Design Characteristics

To further reduce costs, rough-material office chairs often simplify their structure:

  • Support Design: The backrest may rely solely on metal tubes for support, lacking ergonomic curves and failing to fit the back properly.
  • Adjustability: Most offer only basic height adjustment, lacking multi-directional adjustments for lumbar support, headrests, or armrests.
  • Stability: The chair legs have a smaller diameter or use ordinary wheel materials, making movement prone to stuttering or scratching the floor.

Suitable Scenarios and Precautions

Rough-material office chairs are suitable for short-term use or scenarios with limited budgets (such as temporary offices or student study areas). If long-term use is required, attention should be paid to the following issues:

  • Durability: Metal components should be regularly checked for looseness, and plastic components should be kept away from direct sunlight.
  • Comfort: A seat cushion or lumbar support can be added to improve support.
  • Safety: Choose products that have passed basic load-bearing tests (such as BIFMA standards) and avoid overloading.

For higher quality, refer to merchant information to select mid-range models, or pay attention to materials (such as thickened steel tubes, high-density sponge) and certification standards (such as SGS, EN1335).
