Right-Angle Office Chair
Long-term use of right-angle office chairs may be detrimental to lumbar health, and ergonomic design should be prioritized when choosing one.

The backrest angle of a right-angle office chair is usually quite upright, which may not conform to the natural physiological curvature of the human spine. When viewed from the side, the human spine has a forward-convex physiological curvature. In a sitting position, it is desirable to retain this curve to maintain the normal shape and function of the spine. However, a right-angle backrest places the support surface far from the concave part of the lumbar spine, leaving the forward-convex part of the lumbar spine suspended. In this situation, the erector spinae and quadratus lumborum muscles need to remain constantly tense to maintain body balance, triggering isometric contractions, which in turn lead to muscle fatigue and minor injuries. Long-term use of a right-angle office chair may prevent the lower back from getting adequate relaxation and may even cause problems such as lumbar muscle strain.
Nevertheless, there is also an opinion that when the height of the office desk and chair is adjustable and a right-angle sitting posture (e.g., legs at a 90-degree angle) is maintained, it may help relieve lumbar pressure. However, this effect depends more on the proper matching of the desk and chair heights rather than solely on the right-angle design of the chair back. If the desk and chair heights are not well-matched, even maintaining a right-angle sitting posture may not effectively reduce the lumbar burden.
Therefore, when choosing an office chair, it is advisable to give priority to ergonomic design. Ergonomic office chairs usually feature functions such as lumbar support, backrest linkage, and multi-angle adjustment, which can better adapt to the needs of different heights and sitting habits. The lumbar support can provide additional support for the lower back, reducing lumbar pressure; the backrest linkage function can automatically adjust the backrest angle according to body movements, maintaining the natural curvature of the spine; and the multi-angle adjustment function allows users to adjust the backrest angle and seat height according to their own needs, further reducing the health risks associated with prolonged sitting.
