Riding-style Office Chair

Admin October 17, 2026

The riding-style office chair usually refers to the 'saddle chair', a seat designed based on ergonomic principles that emphasizes diverse sitting postures and lumbar protection.

Design Principles and Functional Features

The saddle chair adjusts the pelvic tilt angle and leg support to maintain the hip joint at a 135-degree angle, preserving the natural curve of the lumbar spine and reducing pressure on the spine from prolonged sitting. Its core design philosophy encourages users to freely change their sitting positions (such as sitting upright, sitting backward, or sitting sideways) to avoid muscle fatigue caused by a single posture. For example, when sitting upright, the butterfly-shaped backrest can stretch the chest and shoulders; when sitting backward, the backrest can serve as armrests; and when sitting backward with the chest pressed tightly against the backrest, it helps keep the spine straight.

Structural Composition and Adaptability

  1. Seat: It adopts a saddle-shaped design, with a cushion groove that opens the hip joints, disperses leg pressure, and prevents numbness and swelling. The natural backward tilt angle allows the body to naturally fit against the backrest under gravity, reducing the need for active adjustments.
  2. Backrest: It features a butterfly or T-shaped design, combining support and flexibility. When sitting upright, it fits the back curve; when sitting backward, it provides arm support; and when sitting backward with the spine forced to maintain a neutral position, it is suitable for users who need to correct their sitting posture.
  3. Base: The Balance Movement linkage base enables the seat and backrest to recline synchronously, providing a balanced and smooth movement experience and enhancing sitting stability.

Classification and Application Scenarios

Saddle chairs are divided into single-petal and double-petal types, with the latter being more widely used due to higher comfort. They are suitable for medical, office, industrial production, and home environments but need to be used with a desktop no lower than 80cm to ensure leg movement space.

Historical Development and Brand Background

The design inspiration can be traced back to the Cab chair series by Italian designer Mario Bellini in 1977. In the 1980s, Norwegian designer Peter Opsvik collaborated with the Hร…G brand to launch the Capisco saddle chair, which received international recognition such as the German Red Dot Design Award and the IF Industrial Design Award. Currently, there are high-end models like Finland's Salli and Hร…G on the market, as well as low-cost alternatives.

Usage Precautions

An adaptation period of 1-2 weeks is required for initial use to adjust existing sitting habits. Long-term use can reduce the risk of lumbar spine diseases, but it should be combined with regular standing activities to avoid over-reliance on a single seat function.
