Research and Development of Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

The research and development of office chairs should be carried out from multiple dimensions, covering global R&D layout, user research, product disassembly analysis, and innovative design.

In terms of global R&D layout: We can draw on the model of Sunon Technology and build a "1 + N" global R&D model. With the core research institute as the center, R&D centers are established in different regions. For example, Sunon has set up a European R&D center in Berlin, Germany, and a North American R&D center in Los Angeles, USA. At the same time, collaborate with professional institutions or experts. For instance, Sunon has cooperated with academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering to establish the "Academician Innovation Research Institute for the Green and Low-Carbon Furniture Industry" and jointly developed products with the Swiss B4K studio to integrate global resources and enhance R&D capabilities.

In terms of user research: It is essential to deeply understand user needs and usage scenarios. For example, before developing the Gesture, Steelcase spent a significant amount of time and effort studying the situations of over 2,000 global users after using new technological devices. They summarized nine new postures that traditional office chairs simply could not support and designed a pioneering dynamic ergonomic chair based on this research that could actively follow, serve, and support users.

In terms of product disassembly analysis: Conduct in-depth research on typical products with different styles and concepts. During the preparation stage of the "Fishbone Chair" by Milang Office Chairs, four world-renowned chairs, including the Humanscale - Freedom, were selected for key research. The overall analysis of the chair was divided into six major points. Through disassembly testing, human-machine experiments, and pressure testing, in-depth analysis was conducted on the functions of each part of the seat, related working principles, processing techniques, and material selection, obtaining a large amount of basic data. This helped identify the shortcomings of existing chairs and provided direction for innovative design.

In terms of innovative design: Sort out thinking directions and propose new structural methods. After disassembly analysis, the "Fishbone Chair" by Milang Office Chairs sorted out five analysis directions and methods, including studying the development and adjustment of brand design concepts and studying the functional working principles of each part of the chair and proposing new structural methods. Innovation can also be carried out in product form design. For example, the backrest of the Sihoo H300Pro adopts an integrated bionic keel design, which is different from the previous design of separating the waist and back. This design allows for a better fit of the waist and back.
