Replacing Office Chair Gas Cylinder
The replacement of an office chair gas cylinder can be carried out according to the following steps. Ensure safety during the operation to avoid injury.

I. Removing the Old Gas Cylinder
- Separating the Seat Cushion: Step on one side of the chair legs with your foot, adjust the seat depth to the innermost position, and raise the seat cushion to the highest level. Hold the seat cushion directly above the gas cylinder with both hands, shake it left and right, and pull it upward forcefully to remove it.
- Removing the Casters: Flip the chair legs to a vertical position (i.e., with the seat facing downwards), and pull out the caster assembly vertically.
- Extracting the Gas Cylinder:
- Method 1: Lay the chair flat on the ground, place a hard object (such as a metal block or brick) under the gas cylinder, and strike the top of the gas cylinder vertically with a hammer, using the impact force to detach it from the chair frame.
- Method 2: If the gas cylinder is too tightly connected to the base, hold the gas rod and strike the edge of the base in a circular motion with an iron hammer to loosen the connection. If it still cannot be separated, apply a small amount of cooking oil to the contact surface for lubrication, and let it sit for 1-2 hours before striking again.
- Method 3: Lay the swivel chair down, clamp the metal column of the gas rod with a large pair of pliers, and gently rotate it to separate the upper part of the seat from the base. Then, strike the edge of the base with a hammer or wrench, or strike it after placing a wooden block underneath to avoid directly damaging the chair frame.
II. Selecting a New Gas Cylinder
The gas cylinder has a standard interface design with a uniform diameter. When purchasing, it is crucial to confirm that the length matches that of the original gas cylinder. You can measure the total length of the old gas cylinder (including the metal rod and the cylinder part) or take the old part directly to a hardware store to match the model.
III. Installing the New Gas Cylinder
Align the metal rod end of the new gas cylinder with the mounting hole at the bottom of the chair frame, insert it vertically, and ensure it is fully seated. Some chair frames require screws to secure the bottom of the gas cylinder, so check that the screws are tightened. When installing the seat cushion, align the slot at the bottom of the seat cushion with the top of the gas cylinder, press down gently, and shake it left and right to confirm a secure connection.
Precautions:
- Wear gloves during the operation to avoid metal scratches or flying debris from striking.
- If the gas cylinder cannot be removed due to aging, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for handling. Do not forcefully pry it open to avoid deforming the chair frame.
- Choose a new gas cylinder that has passed safety certifications such as SGS and BIFMA to prevent explosion risks.
