Replacing Office Chair Casters

Admin October 12, 2026

The steps for replacing office chair casters are as follows:

1. Lay the Chair Down

Place the entire office chair on a stable, flat surface to ensure it does not slide or tip over during the operation. This step provides a stable workspace for subsequent disassembly and installation of the casters. If the chair has an adjustable height feature, it is recommended to lock the pneumatic rod or lower it to the minimum height to prevent accidental triggering of the height adjustment during operation.

2. Remove the Old Casters

  • Direct Pull-Out Method: Most casters are connected to the chair legs via a stem. Grasp the caster with your hand and pull it out forcefully in the opposite direction of the stem (usually perpendicular to the chair leg). Some casters have a snap-ring structure, where the snap-ring is inserted into a hole in the corner of the chair leg for fixation. In this case, use your finger or a tool (such as a flat-head screwdriver) to gently press the snap-ring while pulling out the caster outward.
  • Prying Method: If the caster is tightly connected to the chair leg, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the gap between the caster and the chair leg and slowly pry along the edge of the caster to gradually separate the caster from the chair leg. Be careful with the force applied during prying to avoid damaging the chair leg or the caster hole.

3. Measure the Specifications

  • Diameter Measurement: The new caster must match the specifications of the original caster; otherwise, it may result in abnormal seat height after installation (such as the pneumatic rod being too close to the ground or your feet hanging in the air). To measure, remove the caster, flip it upside down, and use a tape measure to measure the diameter of the wheel. If it cannot be removed, measure the visible diameter on the side of the caster directly. Common specifications include diameters of 7.5 cm, 6 cm, and 5 cm. Choose according to the actual measured value.
  • Hole Matching: Some casters have specially designed installation holes (such as square or irregular shapes). Ensure that the holes of the new caster match the chair legs completely to prevent looseness or inability to insert after installation.

4. Purchase New Casters

  • Purchase in Sets: Casters are usually sold in sets of 4 or 5. Choose the corresponding quantity according to the chair model.
  • Specification Matching: Prioritize products that exactly match the diameter and hole pattern of the original casters. If the specifications cannot be confirmed, take the old caster to a hardware store or office furniture accessory store for comparison and purchase.
  • Material Selection: The material of the caster affects its durability and noise reduction effect. Common materials include hard plastic (suitable for carpets), nylon (wear-resistant), and rubber (quiet and slip-resistant). Choose according to the usage scenario.

5. Install the New Casters

  • Direct Insertion Method: Align the stem of the new caster with the hole in the chair leg and insert it forcefully and vertically along the direction of the hole until the caster is fully embedded and does not wobble.
  • Pressing Method: If the caster is tightly installed, use the palm of your hand or a tool (such as a rubber mallet) to apply even pressure and press the caster into the hole. After installation, check that the caster rotates flexibly without jamming or abnormal noise.

Precautions: It is recommended to wear gloves during operation to avoid scratching your fingers. If the chair legs are made of metal, be careful not to scratch the surface during disassembly and installation.
