Replace Office Chair Wheels

Admin October 16, 2026

The method for replacing office chair wheels depends on the type of wheel, and the specific steps are as follows:

I. Replacement of Screw-Fixed Wheels
These wheels are connected to the chair legs with screws and require tools for removal. First, flip the office chair upside down to ensure sufficient operating space. Use a screwdriver that matches the screws (such as a Phillips or flat-head type) and rotate the screws counterclockwise until they are completely unscrewed. If the screws are rusted or stuck due to long-term use, a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) can be sprayed to help loosen them. After removing the old screws, align the new wheel's stem with the mounting hole on the chair leg, then insert the screw through the hole on top of the wheel and rotate it clockwise until it is tightened. Note: The screws must be fully screwed in to prevent the wheels from becoming loose and unstable during use.

II. Replacement of Stem-Type Wheels
Stem-type wheels are fixed by inserting a metal stem directly into a hole on the chair leg, and the replacement method varies depending on the tightness of the wheels.

  1. Direct Pull-Out Method: If the wheels are loosely connected to the chair legs, grasp both sides of the wheels with your hands and pull outward evenly. Some wheels may accumulate dust or wear out over time, reducing friction and allowing them to be pulled out directly.
  2. Tool-Assisted Method: If the wheels are stuck and cannot be pulled out, tools are required. First, clamp the metal stem of the wheel (near the chair leg end) with pliers, then gently tap the handle of the pliers with a hammer to loosen the wheel through vibration; or insert a flat-head screwdriver into the gap between the wheel and the chair leg and slowly pry it to widen the gap. Control the force during operation to avoid damaging the chair legs or wheels.
  3. Installing New Wheels: Align the new wheel's stem with the hole on the chair leg and press down vertically. If it is not fully inserted at once, adjust the angle and try multiple times, or use a rubber mallet to gently tap the top of the wheel to assist in installation. Ensure that the stem is fully inserted into the hole to prevent the wheel from tilting or falling off.

III. General Precautions

  1. Safety First: Place the chair on a stable surface before operating to prevent it from tipping over when flipped; wear gloves when using tools to prevent cuts.
  2. Wheel Compatibility: The size and stem diameter of the new wheels must be the same as those of the original wheels; otherwise, installation may fail or the chair may wobble.
  3. Regular Maintenance: After replacement, a small amount of lubricating oil can be applied to the wheel bearings to reduce friction noise and extend service life.

By following these steps, you can efficiently replace the wheels of your office chair and restore its smooth mobility. If you encounter severely damaged wheels or deformed chair legs during the operation, it is recommended to contact professional maintenance personnel for handling.
