Replace Office Chair Wheels
Admin October 11, 2026
To replace office chair wheels, you need to first remove the old wheels and then install the new ones. Here are the specific steps:

I. Removing the Old Wheels There are two main ways to fix office chair wheels, and you need to choose the corresponding method according to the type:
- Screw-fixed Type (Hexagonal Wheels) These wheels are connected to the chair legs with screws. You need to use a hexagonal wrench (or a wrench of the corresponding size) to turn the screws counterclockwise and remove them. If the screws are rusty or stuck, you can spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) to help loosen them and avoid forcing them, which may cause the screws to slip.
- Pin-fixed Type (Round Wheels) These wheels are fixed by directly inserting a metal pin into the hole in the chair leg. The removal steps are as follows:
- Direct Pulling: Hold both sides of the wheel with your hands and pull it straight up with force. If the friction increases due to long-term use or dust accumulation, you can slightly shake the wheel left and right before pulling.
- Tool Assistance: If you can't pull it directly, you need to use tools:
- Flat-head Screwdriver: Insert the tip of the screwdriver into the gap between the wheel and the chair leg and gently pry to loosen the pin, then try to pull it out.
- Tapping Method: Use a hammer to gently tap the plastic cover below the wheel (if any) or directly tap the top of the pin to reduce friction through vibration. If there is a plastic clip at the bottom of the wheel, you can first scrape off the clip with a screwdriver and then pull out the pin.
- Pliers Assistance: Use pliers to clamp the root of the pin, fix it, and then tap the handle of the pliers with a hammer to pull out the wheel using the principle of leverage.
II. Installing the New Wheels The new wheels are usually designed with pins. When installing, pay attention to the following details:
- Align the Holes: Vertically align the metal pin of the new wheel with the hole in the chair leg to ensure the correct direction (some wheels have fool-proof designs, and the pin matches the shape of the hole).
- Press to Fix: Press evenly on the top of the wheel with the palm of your hand until the pin is fully inserted into the hole. If it is difficult to press, you can gently tap the top of the wheel several times (wrap the hammer with cloth or use a rubber hammer) to avoid deforming the chair leg due to excessive force.
- Check the Firmness: After installation, gently shake the wheel to confirm that there is no looseness or shaking. If the gap between the wheel and the chair leg is too large, it may be that the size of the pin does not match, and you need to replace the wheel with the appropriate specification.
Precautions:
- Wear gloves before operation to avoid scratching your fingers;
- If the chair legs are made of plastic, control the force during removal and installation to prevent cracking;
- Regularly clean the dust at the contact parts between the wheels and the chair legs to extend the service life.
