Replace Office Chair Wheels

Admin October 13, 2026

The steps and precautions for replacing snap-on office chair wheels are as follows:

I. Removing the Old Wheels The key to removing snap-on wheels is to overcome the fixing force of the snaps. First, try to pull the wheels out directly by hand. If the snaps are too tightly engaged due to long-term use, you can use tools to assist:

  1. Pliers Assistance: Use pliers to grip the metal or plastic snap part where the wheel connects to the chair leg, and pull outward evenly. Ensure the pliers' jaws are perpendicular to the wheel surface to avoid damaging the wheel or chair leg due to lateral force.
  2. Hammer Tapping: If the pliers still cannot pull out the wheels, place a hammer on the outside of the wheel (e.g., protect the wheel surface with a wooden block or rubber pad) and gently tap the wheel axle to loosen the snaps using vibration. Control the force when tapping to avoid deforming the chair leg or breaking the wheel axle.

II. Installing the New Wheels When installing new wheels, ensure the axle aligns with the hole on the chair leg to avoid damage caused by forced insertion:

  1. Aligning the Holes: Vertically align the axle of the new wheel with the installation hole on the chair leg and slowly push it in. If there is a slight misalignment in the hole, slightly adjust the wheel angle or gently press the axle with your finger to assist alignment.
  2. Multiple Attempts: If the initial insertion is difficult, it may be because the snaps are not fully expanded or there is debris in the hole. Remove the wheel to check if the hole is clean, or repeat the insertion action 2-3 times to use the self-adjusting function of the elastic snaps to complete the fixation.

III. Wheel Selection Recommendations It is recommended to choose 3-inch black PU wheels, which have the following characteristics:

  • Smooth and Quiet: PU (polyurethane) material has moderate elasticity, resulting in low friction and noise when rolling, suitable for quiet environments such as offices.
  • Floor Protection: The soft surface of PU wheels will not scratch wooden floors, tiles, or carpets, extending the lifespan of the floor.
  • Balance of Mobility and Stability: 3-inch diameter wheels balance steering flexibility and load-bearing stability, suitable for most office scenarios.
  • Load-Bearing Capacity: High-quality PU wheels can bear over 100kg, meeting the usage needs of ordinary office chairs.

Precautions:

  • Avoid using excessive force when removing wheels to prevent breaking the chair leg or wheel axle.
  • Before installation, confirm that the wheel axle diameter matches the hole diameter on the chair leg (usually 10mm or 11mm).
  • If the wheels still cannot be removed or installed, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for handling.
