Repair Office Chair Screws

Admin October 11, 2026

The repair of office chair screws can be carried out according to the following steps:

Step 1: Identify the root cause of the screw problem The looseness of an office chair's backrest is usually caused by loose screws, aging pneumatic rods, or worn connecting parts. First, check for loose screws: Hold the chair back upright and shake it left and right with both hands. If there is a creaking sound or obvious displacement, it indicates loose screws. If the entire backrest sinks or lacks rebound force, then the pneumatic rod or tilt adjustment mechanism needs to be checked.

Step 2: Address loose screws specifically

  1. Locate the screw positions: Focus on checking the cross or hexagonal screws at the connection points between the backrest and the base, as well as the bottom of the armrests. If the screws are covered by plastic caps, use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry them open and re-close them after repair.
  2. Select the right tools and tighten: Use a screwdriver for cross screws and a corresponding wrench for hexagonal screws. Always rotate clockwise (counterclockwise rotation will loosen them further). If the screw hole is stripped, fill it with fine wire or toothpicks to increase friction. If the screw hole is enlarged, wrap a small amount of cotton thread or insert toothpicks before screwing it in. For metal chair legs, use universal glue for temporary fixation.

Step 3: Handle special cases If the chair's toggle is normal but the hydraulic mechanism is detached, check the pivot fixing screws (usually 10*1 non-standard screws). You can use a standard size 10 screw as a replacement: First, tap the threads with a tap or directly use a wrench to fit it in. The installation length should be 30 millimeters (shorter than the original). Since forcing it in may result in improper fit between the nut and bolt, tighten a nut onto the bolt for reinforcement. Note that the screw installation should not hinder the movement of the hydraulic rod, and you can adjust it by adding washers.

Step 4: Prevention and maintenance

  1. Regular inspections: It is recommended to check the screws every three months, especially for gaming chairs and ergonomic chairs that are used frequently.
  2. Enhance stability: If newly assembled furniture frequently comes loose, you can purchase thread-locking adhesive (which requires 24 hours to cure after application) or screw washers from a hardware store to enhance the connection's firmness.

Precautions: Ensure that the tools match the screws during operation to avoid stripping due to excessive force. If the hydraulic rod or complex structures are involved, it is advisable to contact professional repair personnel.
