Repair Office Chair Height Adjustment

Admin October 11, 2026

Repairing office chair height adjustment issues requires different methods depending on the specific problem:

Sideways Tilt or Inability to Adjust Height

If the chair tilts sideways or cannot adjust its height, first prepare a rubber mallet (a regular hammer with a towel wrapped around it can also work). Turn the chair upside down on the floor, remove the screws securing the bottom tray, and separate the seat cushion from the tray. Then, disassemble the base, gas lift cylinder, and chair legs to inspect the faulty part. When disassembling the base, hold the chair upside down with one hand and strike specific areas of the base with the rubber mallet. After a few strikes, the base should separate. If the issue is with the gas lift cylinder, turn the chair upside down and use the flat side of the hammer to gently tap the bottom of the gas lift cylinder. Be sure to use a flat surface and avoid hitting the middle button on the cylinder.

Automatic Descent of the Height-Adjustable Chair

  • Aging and Pressure Loss of the Gas Lift Cylinder: The gas lift cylinder is a consumable part. After long-term repeated height adjustments, the internal seals age, causing slow leakage of high-pressure gas and a weakened locking ability. This is especially common if the chair has been used for more than five years.
  • Air Leakage Due to Seal Wear: The gas lift cylinder has multiple layers of seals inside. Dust, moisture, and the aging of lubricating oil entering the interior can degrade the sealing performance, resulting in minor leaks and an inability to lock. This fault generally cannot be resolved through disassembly and repair.
  • The Adjustment Lever Constantly Pressing the Valve: The metal lever connecting the adjustment handle and the gas lift cylinder under the chair may continuously press the pin if its installation position is off, the screws are loose, or the plastic parts are worn. This keeps the valve in a semi-open state, causing the chair to slowly descend continuously. This fault is a mechanical structural issue and is relatively easy to repair.
  • Deformation of the Base Mechanism: Prolonged overloading or a strong impact to the chair may cause slight deformation of the base steel plate, affecting height adjustment.

Height Adjustment Failure, Chair Cannot Be Lifted

You can use an Allen wrench to tighten the screws and then use a crowbar to strike the relevant parts for repair. Additionally, when replacing the gas lift cylinder, be sure to choose products with relevant system certifications such as SGS and TUV, and do not opt for cheap alternatives.
