Repair Office Chair Armrest
Admin October 16, 2026
Repairing an office chair armrest requires selecting the appropriate method based on the type of damage. Common situations and their handling methods are as follows:

I. Fracture of the solid-wood armrest of a cross-legged chair If the armrest is made of solid wood and has fractured, follow these steps for repair:
- Bond the fracture: Apply woodworking glue evenly to the fractured surfaces, ensuring the glue layer covers all contact areas. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to allow initial penetration of the glue, then repeat the application 2-3 times to enhance bonding strength.
- Reinforce the framework: Use an electric drill to drill holes diagonally at the fracture (at an angle of about 45ยฐ), to a depth of one-third of the armrest's diameter. Then drill vertically through to the other side and insert a glue-coated wooden stick as the framework. The diameter of the stick should match the hole diameter. After insertion, tap it gently with a hammer to secure it and prevent misalignment.
- Trim the surface: Cut off the excess wooden stick, use a utility knife to flatten the protruding parts, and then sand the surface with sandpaper (increasing grit from 240 to 600) until it is smooth and free of burrs.
- Paint for protection: First, apply a base coat of paint, dry it with a hot air gun or hairdryer at a low temperature (more than 20 cm away). After the paint dries, sand it with fine sandpaper, then spray a top coat of paint and dry it again to form a protective layer.
II. Wear of the screw holes in the base of the armrest or fracture of the metal bracket of a connected mesh-fabric swivel chair These issues are usually caused by long-term use and can be resolved by installing a connected metal armrest kit:
- Select the kit: Prioritize kits with a built-in slight inclination design (elbow naturally hanging down at 15ยฐ), which can reduce shoulder pressure and prevent wrist stiffness.
- Install the mesh fabric: The kit is equipped with a 'mesh fabric pocket slot'. There is no need to remove the old mesh fabric. Simply align the U-shaped groove of the new armrest with the edge of the old mesh fabric, press down firmly, and fasten the clips.
- Secure the bracket: Align the metal bracket of the kit with the original screw hole positions and tighten with the provided screws. If the original holes are severely worn, first enlarge them with self-tapping screws or fill them with metal repair glue before installation.
III. Damage to the surface of the armrest of a regular office swivel chair If the armrest surface is wooden and damaged, you can make a replacement part yourself:
- Remove the old part: Use a screwdriver to remove the fixing screws of the armrest surface and carefully take off the old part to avoid damaging the support plate.
- Make a template: Place the old armrest surface on thick cardboard, trace its outline with a pencil, cut out the paper template, then stick it onto a piece of rosewood offcut and cut along the edge with a jigsaw.
- Join the wood pieces: Apply woodworking glue to the sides of the cut wood pieces, clamp them tightly with woodworking clamps, and let them sit for 24 hours until the glue cures before removing the clamps.
- Shape and install: Use a hand plane and sandpaper to trim the joined surfaces. Place the old support plate on the new wood piece, trace its outline, cut the shape, install it, and finally apply wood wax oil or paint for protection.
