Repair Office Chair Armrest

Admin October 09, 2026

Repairing an office chair armrest requires selecting the appropriate method based on the material and extent of damage. Here are some common repair methods:

1. Repair of Thai-style solid wood chair armrests If the armrest is made of Thai-style solid wood and has broken, it is recommended to contact a professional carpenter for handling. The repair process is as follows:

  • Fix the break: Use clamps or straps to temporarily fix the broken part, ensuring proper alignment.
  • Drill and insert wooden plugs: Drill holes in the broken cross-section, select wooden plugs that match the wood density (such as those used in mortise-and-tenon joints), apply wood glue, and insert them to enhance the connection strength.
  • Sand and color match: After the glue has completely dried (usually more than 24 hours), sand the joint until smooth. Then, mix pigments according to the original wood color, achieve color transition through layered coloring and wood grain tracing, and finally apply tung oil or varnish to protect the surface. Key points: Solid wood repair requires strict temperature control (15-25ยฐC) and humidity control (40-60%) to avoid stress on the glue before it dries completely.

2. Refitting and repair of office swivel chair armrest surfaces For damaged plastic or leather armrest surfaces, they can be refitted with wooden armrest surfaces:

  • Remove the old armrest surface: Use a screwdriver or wrench to remove the fixing screws and record the installation structure for restoration.
  • Create a template and splice wooden strips: Use a pencil to trace the outline of the old armrest surface on cardboard, cut it out as a template, draw the outline on small wooden strips (such as pine strips), apply wood glue, and splice them into a whole panel.
  • Shape and surface treatment: Use a handsaw to cut the arc of the armrest surface along the edge of the template, sand from coarse to fine (80 grit โ†’ 240 grit โ†’ 400 grit), and finally apply wood wax oil or water-based paint to enhance wear resistance. Key points: The wooden strips should be spliced with staggered joints to avoid cracking at a single joint; wood wax oil should be applied 2-3 times, with an interval of 4 hours between each layer.

3. Reinforcement of broken solid wood chair armrests If the armrest is made of ordinary solid wood and the break is small, a nail gun reinforcement method can be used:

  • Nail gun connection: Use a pneumatic nail gun to drive 3-4 U-shaped nails into the inner side of the broken surface. The nail length should penetrate two-thirds of the wood thickness to ensure a firm connection.
  • Fill and sand: Use a mixture of wood powder and white glue to fill the nail holes and cracks. After drying, sand the surface until smooth.
  • Color and protect: Mix nitrocellulose lacquer or water-based wood paint according to the original wood color, spray it 2-3 times with an interval of 6 hours between each application, and finally apply beeswax or varnish to enhance the luster. Key points: When using a nail gun, wear safety goggles to avoid wood chips flying; the filling material should closely match the wood color.

Precautions:

  • Before repairing, assess the structural stability of the armrest. If the main frame is damaged, it should be reinforced first.
  • Chemical glues (such as epoxy resin glue) should be used in a well-ventilated environment, and gloves should be worn to avoid skin contact.
  • Avoid placing weight on the repaired armrest for 24 hours after repair to ensure the glue or paint layer is completely cured.
