Renovate Old Office Chair
You can refer to the following methods to renovate an old office chair, addressing different issues accordingly:

1. Repair a sunken seat
If the seat has become sunken due to long-term use, first clean the sunken area. Use latex filling material (such as latex particles or expanding foam) to evenly fill the sunken part, ensuring that the filling is level with the original seat height. After filling, let it sit for 24 hours for the material to solidify. Then, cover the surface with lambswool-like fabric or wear-resistant fabric and secure the edges with hot-melt glue or special fabric adhesive. This method not only repairs the sunken area but also enhances the appearance. It is suitable for seats with sponge or spring structures. Be mindful of the filling amount to avoid over-bulging.
2. Comprehensive refurbishment and functional upgrades
For issues such as faded colors, easy dust accumulation, or stuck wheels, a systematic renovation can be carried out:
- Replace the seat cover: Choose a one-piece elastic seat cover (such as one made of polyester blend fabric). Secure it with side zippers or elastic straps to cover the original seat and backrest, solving the problems of monotonous colors and dust buildup. The seat cover should be cleaned regularly (recommended once a month) to maintain hygiene.
- Upgrade the wheels: If the original wheels are made of hard plastic or metal, replace them with TPE silent caster wheels. These wheels have low friction, produce little noise, and will not scratch wooden floors. When replacing, ensure that the wheel diameter matches the chair legs (common sizes are 50mm or 65mm) and tighten the fixing screws with a screwdriver.
- Add comfort accessories: Add a memory foam seat cushion (recommended thickness of 3-5cm) to the seat. Secure it with Velcro or straps to distribute the pressure on the buttocks and improve long-sitting comfort. If the chair has no lumbar support, attach an adjustable lumbar support cushion to support the lumbar spine.
3. Completely rebuild the seat structure
If the seat is severely deformed or the material is aged (such as a cracked wooden seat), disassemble the original structure and remake it:
- After removing the old seat, cut multi-layer solid wood boards or high-density fiberboards according to the size as the base. Use woodworking glue to fix wooden strips to reinforce the edges.
- Lay a 3cm thick high-resilience sponge on the base, secure it with spray adhesive, and then wrap it with non-slip suede fabric. Seal the edges with edge-binding tape.
- When reinstalling the seat, ensure that the screw holes are aligned and use an electric drill to tighten them to prevent looseness. This method requires some woodworking skills and is suitable for those with strong hands-on abilities.
Precautions: Before renovation, evaluate the structural stability of the chair. If the frame is damaged (such as a broken chair leg), repair or replace it first. Keep the area well-ventilated when using glue or filling materials to avoid inhaling harmful gases. Regularly check the fixing screws of the wheels to prevent them from falling off.
