Renovate Office Chair Armrests
There are several methods to renovate office chair armrests, and you can choose the appropriate one based on specific needs and materials:

1. Renovation Using Leftover Cotton Batting and Fabric Scraps This method is suitable for old armrests with worn surfaces but intact structures. By using corner-sewing techniques, fill the sunken areas of the armrest surface with leftover cotton batting to restore its fullness. Then, use fabric scraps for patchwork design and cover the armrest surface. During operation, pay attention to the flatness of the fabric scrap joints. You can use invisible stitching to sew the edges to avoid exposed thread ends. If the armrest material is leather or hard plastic, first attach a layer of non-woven fabric as a base and then cover it with the fabric scrap layer to enhance adhesion. After renovation, the armrests will have both comfort and decorative appeal, suitable for those who pursue personalization and have a limited budget.
2. Repair and Modification of Office Swivel Chair Armrest Surfaces For damaged armrest surfaces made of rosewood or solid wood, the following steps can be taken:
- Disassembly and Mold Making: Use a screwdriver to disassemble the armrest surface and retain the support plate structure. Place the support plate on thick cardboard to trace the outline, cut out the cardboard mold, and then transfer it to rosewood offcuts. Mark the cutting lines with a pencil.
- Wood Processing: Use a jigsaw to cut the wood along the marked lines to obtain two symmetrical wood pieces. Apply wood glue to the sides and fix them with wood clamps for 24 hours until the glue cures, ensuring a seamless fit between the joined surfaces.
- Shaping and Sanding: Use a small hand plane to flatten the back of the joined surface and sand the bottom surface with coarse sandpaper until smooth. Place the support plate on the joined wood surface to trace the outline, and then use the jigsaw to cut out the final shape. Finally, sand the surface gradually with fine sandpaper (from 400 grit to 2000 grit) and apply wood wax or paint to protect the surface. This method requires some woodworking skills but can restore the original texture of the armrest and extend its service life.
3. Modification for Low Computer Chair Armrests If the height of the armrests is insufficient and affects sitting posture, you can raise the height by adding a wooden block:
- Drilling and Fixing: Select a wooden block that matches the width of the armrest and mark the drilling positions. First, use a small drill bit to pre-drill guide holes, and then switch to a larger drill bit to enlarge the holes to match the diameter of the screws. Drill corresponding holes in the chair armrests, insert the screws through the wooden block and the armrests, and tighten the nuts to fix them.
- Detail Optimization: To avoid the edges of the wooden block digging into your hands, sand the corners round with sandpaper. If there is a gap between the wooden block and the armrest, insert a rubber sheet to increase stability. This solution is low-cost and reversible, suitable for temporary adjustment needs.
4. Renovation of Old Ergonomic Chair Armrests For ergonomic chair armrests with misaligned holes or mismatched sizes, you can replace them with adjustable armrest components:
- Disassembly of Old Armrests: Use a screwdriver to remove the fixing screws of the original armrests and record the hole distribution.
- Installation of New Armrests: Choose adjustable armrests that are compatible with the chair frame, align the holes, insert the screws, and tighten them with a wrench. If the holes of the new armrests do not match the original chair, you can use an electric drill to make new holes in the frame (ensure that it does not damage the structural strength). This method requires confirming the compatibility of the new armrests with the chair, and it is recommended to choose original factory parts first.
