Removing Office Chair Wheels

Admin October 09, 2026

The method for removing office chair wheels depends on the type of wheel. Here are the common types and their corresponding removal methods:

1. Screw-type wheels
If the wheels are fixed with screws, use a tool that matches the screws (such as a Phillips or flat-head screwdriver) for removal. Steps:

  • Lay the chair down so that the wheels face upwards, making it easier to observe the screw positions;
  • Align the screwdriver with the screw head and rotate it counterclockwise to gradually loosen the screws; - If the screws are rusted or stuck, apply a small amount of lubricating oil (such as WD-40) to help loosen them;
  • Once the screws are fully unscrewed, gently pull out the wheels.
    Note: Keep the screwdriver perpendicular to the screws during removal to avoid slipping and damaging the threads.

2. Pin-type wheels
Pin-type wheels are fixed by inserting a metal pin directly into the chair leg hole, and removal requires overcoming friction. Steps:

  • Direct pull-out: Grasp both sides of the wheel with both hands and pull upwards evenly. This method is suitable for cases where there is a relatively large gap between the pin and the hole;
  • Tool-assisted: If you lack strength, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the gap between the pin and the chair leg and gently pry to loosen the wheel; or use pliers to grip the base of the pin and lightly tap the pliers' handle with a hammer to separate the wheel through vibration;
  • Lay down and tap: Turn the chair upside down, lightly tap the edge of the wheel with a flat-head screwdriver to separate it from the chair leg, and then lightly tap the top of the pin with a hammer until the wheel falls off.
    Key point: Control the force when prying or tapping to avoid damaging the chair leg or pin.

3. Other general tips

  • Flat-head tool: If the wheel is stuck, insert a flat-head screwdriver or a similar tool into the gap between the wheel and the chair leg, and slowly pry along the edge of the wheel to gradually widen the gap and then pull it out;
  • Heating method (use with caution): For stubborn wheels, briefly heat the area around the pin with a hot air gun (avoid high temperatures that could damage the plastic) to make the material expand and facilitate removal;
  • Protective measures: It is recommended to lay a soft cloth on the ground during removal to prevent the wheels or tools from falling and damaging the floor.

Safety tips: Wear gloves before operating to avoid cuts; if the wheels are severely aged, they may break during removal, so clean up the debris in advance; after removal, check the chair leg holes for any residue to ensure that the new wheels are installed securely.
