Removing Office Chair Base
Admin October 11, 2026
The following steps can be followed to remove the base of an office chair. Before starting, make sure to prepare the necessary tools and take safety precautions:

I. Preparation
- Tool Preparation: Rubber mallet, screwdriver, lubricant, gloves, calipers (depending on the structure). The rubber mallet is used to knock apart components, the screwdriver for removing screws, the lubricant for dealing with tightly connected pneumatic rods, and gloves to protect your hands from scratches.
- Environment Inspection: Ensure the work area is spacious and well-lit to avoid interference from clutter. Disconnect the chair's power supply (if it's an electric chair) to prevent accidental activation of functions during operation.
- Safety Precautions: Wear gloves to prevent metal parts from scratching your skin during disassembly. If the chair has a complex structure (e.g., with electric adjustment functions), it's advisable to take photos of the positions of various components in advance for easier reassembly later.
II. Disassembly Steps
- Removing the Seat Cushion
- Step on the chair's feet to stabilize the chair. Press the height adjustment lever with your hand and gently shake the seat cushion, or lightly tap the connection between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod with a screwdriver to loosen the cushion and then remove it. This step exposes the connection structure between the base and the pneumatic rod.
- Inverting the Chair
- Turn the chair upside down so that the base faces upwards. This position makes it easier to operate the connection between the base and the pneumatic rod and prevents components from falling off due to gravity and causing injuries.
- Separating the Base from the Pneumatic Rod
- Method 1 (Shaking Method): If the base is fixed with snap fasteners, first separate the backrest (if it has a detachable structure), and then raise the pneumatic rod to its highest position. Hold the seat frame with one hand and press the height adjustment lever with the other hand while shaking the base left and right. Use inertia to loosen the snap fasteners and then remove the base.
- Method 2 (Tapping Method): If the base and the pneumatic rod have an interference fit, evenly tap along the edge of the base's steel ring with a rubber mallet to gradually separate them by causing metal fatigue. Control the force when tapping to avoid damaging the surface of the pneumatic rod.
- Removing the Upper Seat (Optional)
- If the base and the upper seat (the part that supports the seat cushion) are separate structures, use a screwdriver to remove the fixing screws of the upper seat. Then, separate it completely from the pneumatic rod by tapping or stepping on the edge of the upper seat. This step is suitable for situations where further repair of the upper seat is required.
- Handling the Pneumatic Rod (if necessary)
- If the pneumatic rod is too tightly connected to the base, apply a small amount of lubricant to the connection between the upper seat and the pneumatic rod. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and then try to disassemble it. The lubricant can penetrate the gaps and reduce friction.
III. Precautions
- Safety First: Avoid using excessive force during disassembly to prevent components from flying off, especially the pneumatic rod (which may contain residual high-pressure gas inside).
- Protect the Appearance: Wrap the parts to be tapped with the rubber mallet in a soft cloth to prevent scratching the metal or plastic surfaces.
- Disassemble in an Orderly Manner: Store the removed screws, snap fasteners, and other small components separately to avoid losing them.
- Handling Complex Structures: If the chair has functions such as electric adjustment and tilt locking, or if the base and the pneumatic rod are welded together as one piece, it's recommended to contact professional repair personnel to avoid damage caused by self-disassembly.
