Refurbishing Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

Refurbishing office chairs can be achieved through three main methods: basic refurbishment, in-depth renovation, and structural repair. Here are the specific methods and precautions:

Basic refurbishment is suitable for office chairs with surface dirt or minor damage. If the leather or fabric on the seat or backrest shows obvious stains or local damage, first remove the backrest panel, clean the metal support rods, and then spray them with silver self-spraying paint to restore their luster. For the leather or fabric parts of the seat cushion and backrest, the old material should be stripped off, the base layer cleaned, and then re-covered with a new leather cover or fabric. When operating, pay attention to evenly applying special adhesive to the base layer. When the adhesive is half-dry, align and attach the new leather cover, fix the edges with a stapler, and then trim the excess parts to ensure a flat and wrinkle-free surface. This method has a relatively low cost and is suitable for scenarios with a limited budget and minor damage.

In-depth renovation is aimed at office chairs with severely aged or damaged leather surfaces. If the leather shows large-area cracking, peeling, or fading, completely strip off the old leather, clean the sponge base layer, and then re-wrap it with diamond-patterned leather. The diamond-patterned design not only enhances the texture but also fixes the leather through stitching, reducing the risk of future cracking. When operating, use professional leather stitching tools to ensure uniform spacing between the diamonds; for edge treatment, double-needle stitching or invisible zippers can be used to enhance durability. This method has a relatively high cost but can significantly extend the service life of the chair, making it suitable for high-end office chairs or scenarios with high aesthetic requirements.

Structural repair addresses issues such as tilting or wobbling of office chairs. If the chair tilts to one side, first check if the wheels are damaged: use a wrench to remove the old wheels, clean the wheel axles, apply lubricant, install new wheels, and test their smooth rolling. If the wheels are intact, check if the seat plate is deformed or if the connecting parts are loose: remove the seat plate and observe whether the metal frame is bent. If it is slightly deformed, use a hydraulic press to correct it; if the connecting parts are loose, tighten the screws or replace the damaged plastic parts. This method requires a certain level of hands-on skills, and it is recommended that non-professionals operate under guidance to avoid secondary damage caused by improper disassembly.

The refurbishment cost varies greatly depending on the material and the degree of damage. The cost of basic refurbishment (such as painting and replacing the leather cover) is approximately 50-200 yuan; in-depth renovation (such as wrapping with diamond-patterned leather) costs 300-800 yuan; structural repair (such as replacing wheels and correcting the frame) costs between 100-500 yuan. Labor costs account for a relatively high proportion, so it is advisable to choose a qualified repairer and request material warranty services.
