Lowering Office Chair Height

Admin October 08, 2026

The method for lowering an office chair depends on the type of chair. Details are as follows:

I. Office Chairs with Height Adjustment Function

  1. Locate the Adjustment Mechanism
    The pneumatic rod adjustment lever is usually located at the center of the bottom of the seat, and the knob may be on the side of the bottom of the seat. For some chairs, you may need to use a wrench or handle; first, identify the location of the adjustment components.

  2. Unlock the Adjustment Mechanism

  • Pneumatic rod adjustment lever: Some require you to pull up the black plastic part on the adjustment lever to unlock it;
  • Knob type: Simply turn the knob to unlock it;
  • Inflatable type: Find the air rod knob and turn it clockwise to unlock it.
  1. Lower the Seat Height
  • Manual operation: Hold the adjustment lever and press it down slowly, or turn the knob counterclockwise (depending on the actual adjustment method), and the seat will gradually descend;
  • Using body weight: Sit on the chair, pull the wrench or pull the handle downwards, and use your body weight to lower the chair;
  • Inflatable adjustment: Turn the air rod knob clockwise to lower the chair height.
    Note: Maintain your body balance during the process and observe whether the height is appropriate.
  1. Adjust to the Appropriate Height
    When the seat is close to the target height, ensure that your feet are flat on the ground, your thighs are parallel to the ground, and your knees are naturally bent at a comfortable angle. If the height is not appropriate, repeat the fine-tuning operation.

  2. Lock the Adjustment Mechanism

  • Pneumatic rod adjustment lever: Push the adjustment lever back up to its original position to lock it;
  • Knob type: Turn the knob clockwise to the locked state;
  • Inflatable type: Turn the air rod knob counterclockwise to complete the locking.

II. Fixed Office Chairs (Without Height Adjustment Mechanism)

  1. Replace the Gas Rod
  • Remove the old gas rod: Turn the chair upside down, use a slender tool to press the spring clip on the inside of the base, and pull the rod upwards at the same time. If it is stuck tightly, you can apply edible oil for lubrication. After waiting for 20 minutes to 2 hours, gently tap the connection with a hammer until there is a gap, and then pull it out;
  • Install the new gas rod: Align the new gas rod with the hole on the base and insert it vertically to fix it.
    Note: It is strictly forbidden to forcibly disassemble by hammering, prying hard, or heating to avoid damaging the components.
  1. Install Adjustable Foot Pads
    If the chair is only a few millimeters to 1 centimeter higher, you can install adjustable foot pads for fine-tuning. Choose foot pads that fit the base of the chair and adjust the height through the rotation or telescoping function so that your feet are flat on the ground. This method is simple to operate and has a low cost, suitable for small-scale height adjustments.
