Recycling Office Chair Materials

Admin October 22, 2026

When recycling office chairs, the materials are a key factor affecting the recycling price, with significant differences in the recycling value of different materials, as detailed below:

The recycling value of upholstered office chairs primarily depends on the fabric type and brand premium. Among them, genuine leather fabric, due to its scarcity and durability, usually commands the highest recycling price; PU faux leather, as a synthetic leather, costs less than genuine leather but more than fabric, with a medium recycling value; fabric upholstery, being common and prone to aging, has a relatively low recycling price. Additionally, brand factors also influence value, with products from well-known brands potentially receiving higher quotes due to their design, craftsmanship, or market recognition. Besides the fabric, the condition of the hardware components of the chair is also a key assessment point, such as whether the gas lift is collapsed or can still function properly, and whether the five-star base and casters are damaged or missing. The intactness of these components directly affects the recycling price. If the hardware is severely damaged, repair costs may need to be deducted or the overall valuation reduced.

The recycling method for metal office chairs differs from that of upholstered ones, typically being priced by weight, with prices fluctuating according to the scrap steel market. For example, components with high iron content, such as ordinary steel frame table legs, have recycling prices linked to scrap steel prices, which may rise or fall with market fluctuations. In contrast, high-value metals like aluminum alloy and stainless steel, being lighter and more corrosion-resistant, are categorized separately for recycling, usually commanding higher prices than ordinary steel. The recycling value of these metals depends not only on weight but also on purity and surface treatment processes. For instance, metals with plating or coating may require additional processing, affecting the final quote.

When recycling, it's also important to note that the overall structural integrity of the chair affects the price. If an office chair is severely damaged (e.g., frame breakage, extensive fabric damage), even with high-quality materials, its recycling value may be significantly reduced, potentially being treated as scrap only. Therefore, it is advisable to conduct a preliminary inspection of the chair before recycling, retaining intact components or sorting them in advance to improve recycling efficiency and returns.
