Real Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

A real office chair is a chair equipped for the convenience of work in daily work and social activities. It can be classified into narrow and broad senses, has undergone an evolutionary development, consists of basic components, has safety issues, and also includes products focusing on ergonomic design.

Narrow and Broad Definitions: OfficeMate categorizes office chairs into narrow and broad senses. A narrow-sense office chair refers to a backrest chair used when a person is sitting at a desk for work. A broad-sense office chair encompasses all chairs used in an office, such as executive chairs and staff chairs.

Development History: Office chairs originally evolved from Windsor chairs. Thomas Jefferson transformed it into a swivel chair, Charles Robert Darwin added wheels, and Thomas Warren invented an office chair in 1849 that could rotate, slide, and had a resilient seat surface, with continuous improvements to meet office needs.

Structural Composition: An office chair is composed of eight basic components, including casters, a five-star base, a gas lift, and a chassis. Among them, the gas lift is the core component for adjusting the seat height. Common materials include leather and mesh, each with distinct characteristics in terms of comfort and breathability.

Safety Issues: Office chairs have some safety hazards. On March 2, 2023, the United States and Canada recalled office chairs made in China due to the risk of the backrest breaking, which could lead to falls. Twelve reports, including ten injuries, had been received. On September 30, 2024, the State Administration for Market Regulation's national supervision and inspection of office chairs found that 15 batches of products were unqualified, with stability issues being prominent. On January 16, 2025, the United States recalled WorkPro Momentum office chairs made in China due to the risk of bolt failure, which could lead to falls. Seven reports had been received, including two minor injuries.

Ergonomic Design Products: There are also office chairs on the market that focus on ergonomic design. For example, the Gedeli Q7 has a simple office-style overall design. Its frame is mainly made of nylon plastic, the five-star base is made of aluminum alloy, the wheels are PU silent wheels, the mesh material is Yungan fresh flocking special mesh, and the headrest is a 5D double-joint headrest that supports four-dimensional adjustment including up-down, front-back, rotation, and axial rotation. There are also brands such as Xiamu, Herman Miller, and Sihoo. Taking the Xiamu Fit CC ergonomic chair as an example, its core advantage lies in the ZeroG Flow dynamic lumbar support system, which integrates multiple systems to form a complete dynamic lumbar protection solution.
