Pulley Office Chair Removal

Admin October 11, 2026

The removal of a pulley office chair should be carried out according to standardized procedures, with the core process divided into four steps: preparation, disassembly, handling stuck components, and cleaning.

I. Preparation

  1. Tool Preparation: You will need a flat-head screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, a wrench or torque wrench (for removing screws), lubricant (such as WD-40), a cloth, and anti-scratch gloves. The needle-nose pliers are used to pry open spring-loaded pulleys, the lubricant is for dealing with rusted or stuck components, and the gloves prevent scratches.
  2. Safety Precautions:
    • Do Not Disassemble the Gas Cylinder: The gas cylinder is filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas. Striking, prying, or heating it may cause gas leakage or an explosion. Simply flip the chair over to work on the pulley parts.
    • Operating Environment: Choose a flat, open area, clear the chair of any items, and keep it away from fire sources and sharp objects.
    • Check the Condition: If the gas cylinder has issues such as failure to lift or lower, air leakage, or strange noises, contact a professional for inspection and repair. Do not attempt to handle it yourself.

II. Core Disassembly Steps

  1. Flip the Chair: Turn the chair upside down so that the wheels are facing upwards for easier operation.
  2. Identify the Pulley Type:
    • Spring-Loaded Type (Quick-Release Type): The top of the wheel's insert rod has an elastic metal retaining ring. To remove it, hold the wheel vertically with your hand, press it lightly, and pull it outward, using the deformation of the retaining ring to release it. If it is difficult to do by hand, you can use a flat-head screwdriver to press against the inner side of the retaining ring from the side gap of the wheel to assist in loosening it.
    • Threaded Type (Screw-Post Type): The wheel has a rotatable metal screw rod. Simply rotate the wheel counterclockwise to unscrew it from the threaded hole in the chair leg base.
  3. Handle Stuck Pulleys: If a pulley is stuck due to rust or deformation, do not pull it forcefully. First, spray a small amount of lubricant at the interface between the wheel and the chair leg, wait for it to penetrate, then use needle-nose pliers to grip the root of the wheel axle and shake it left and right while pulling it outward. Alternatively, use large scissors or needle-nose pliers to align the opening with the interface, pry it up and down, and rotate the wheel counterclockwise at the same time.

III. Cleaning and Finalization After removing all the old pulleys, use a cloth to clean the dust and debris from the mounting holes in the chair legs to ensure good contact when installing or replacing new pulleys later.

IV. Precautions

  1. Pay attention to the stability of the chair during operation to avoid tipping over or getting injured.
  2. Apply an appropriate amount of force when gripping the pulley bearings to prevent damage to the components.
  3. Apply the lubricant evenly and in an appropriate amount to avoid staining clothes or the floor.
  4. If the pulley bearing is damaged or there is debris inside, replace it with a new wheel in a timely manner to ensure safety in use.
