Formaldehyde in Office Chairs for Pregnant Women

Admin October 09, 2026

Pregnant women should pay great attention to the use of office chairs that may contain formaldehyde, as formaldehyde can pose serious health risks to both the mother and the baby, and targeted protective measures should be taken.

Hazards of Formaldehyde to Pregnant Women and Fetuses
Materials such as artificial boards and adhesives in new office chairs may continuously release formaldehyde. Its pungent odor has a direct irritating effect on the respiratory tract, eyes, and throat of pregnant women. Long-term exposure to an environment with excessive formaldehyde levels may cause symptoms in pregnant women such as dizziness, headaches, tearing, and throat discomfort. In severe cases, it may affect fetal development through the placenta and increase the risk of fetal malformations.

Protective Measure Recommendations

  1. Prioritize Replacement or Isolation of Pollution Sources
If the office chair has a pungent formaldehyde odor or is detected to have excessive formaldehyde levels, it should be immediately replaced with a product that meets environmental protection standards (such as E0-grade boards), or the pregnant woman should temporarily stay away from this environment to avoid continuous exposure.

  2. Enhance Ventilation and Air Purification
Maintain daily ventilation in the office area 2-3 times a day, for more than 30 minutes each time, to promote the volatilization of formaldehyde. Activated carbon bags can be used in combination to adsorb free formaldehyde (which need to be replaced regularly), or passive air purifiers (which filter formaldehyde through HEPA filters and activated carbon layers) can be selected. Avoid using active purification technologies that may generate ozone.

  3. Nutritional Support and Health Monitoring
Pregnant women need to supplement 400-800 micrograms of folic acid and an appropriate amount of vitamins daily to promote fetal neural tube development. At the same time, they should have prenatal check-ups every 4-6 weeks, focusing on monitoring fetal growth indicators (such as biparietal diameter and femoral length) and malformation screenings. If abnormal symptoms such as vaginal bleeding or abdominal pain occur, they should seek medical attention immediately.

  4. Strictly Select Environmentally Friendly Products
When purchasing office chairs, prioritize products that have passed the China Environmental Labeling Certification (Ten-Ring Certification) or the EU CE Certification, and avoid using low-environmental-grade materials such as density boards and particle boards. Merchants can be required to provide formaldehyde emission test reports (the national standard GB/T 39600-2021 stipulates that E1-grade โ‰ค 0.124mg/mยณ and E0-grade โ‰ค 0.05mg/mยณ).

Emergency Handling Principles
If a pregnant woman develops symptoms such as persistent coughing, difficulty breathing, or skin allergies after exposure to formaldehyde, she should immediately leave the environment and go to the hospital for blood tests, urine tests, and fetal ultrasound examinations to assess the potential impact of formaldehyde exposure on the mother and baby.
