Pneumatic Lift Office Chair

Admin October 16, 2026

A pneumatic lift office chair, also known as a gas-lift office chair, is a common office furniture item that adjusts seat height through the movement of an internal cylinder piston rod. Its core component is a gas spring, and users should be aware of safety risks and follow proper operating procedures.

Structure and Working Principle

The core component of a pneumatic lift office chair is the gas spring (pneumatic rod), which is filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas (usually with a purity requirement of over 90%, and over 99% for genuine products). The piston divides the gas spring into upper and lower chambers. When a person sits on the chair and applies pressure, the piston moves downward, compressing the lower chamber, and the lifting shaft descends smoothly. When the external force is removed, the nitrogen gas pressure in the lower chamber pushes the piston back to its original position, and the lifting shaft rises. Its lifting function relies on pressure differences, and it can be locked at any position during its travel using a release mechanism to maintain a stable seat height.

Features and Advantages

Pneumatic lift office chairs are cost-effective, simple in structure, and flexible in operation. The lifting process is smooth, eliminating the need for manual adjustment of mechanical structures. Users can easily adjust the height by simply using their body weight or performing simple operations. Therefore, they are widely used in office settings to meet the personalized height requirements of users of different heights.

Safety and Risks

Genuine products ensure safety through multiple design features:

  1. High-purity nitrogen filling: Nitrogen is chemically stable, preventing pressure abnormalities caused by gas reactions.
  2. Explosion-proof steel plate: A steel plate with a thickness of no less than 2mm is installed between the gas rod and the chair seat to prevent fragments from flying in the event of a gas rod explosion.
  3. Safety certifications: Consumers should choose products that have passed international safety certifications such as BIFMA and EN1335, avoiding low-quality gas rods (e.g., those with insufficient nitrogen purity or thin tube walls).

Risk scenarios: Using low-quality gas rods or engaging in frequent lifting and lowering, or exposing the chair to high-temperature environments (such as direct sunlight or prolonged placement near heating sources) can cause a sudden increase in pressure inside the gas rod, leading to an explosion.

Disassembly and Maintenance

If you need to disassemble the gas rod (e.g., for repair or replacement), follow these steps:

  1. Turn the chair upside down so that the base is facing up. Use a rubber mallet to tap around the bottom steel ring and then try to pry it open. Repeat this process until the base is removed.
  2. Remove the upper seat. Use a hammer to tap the metal chassis and apply force with your hands or feet to separate the hydraulic lifting rod.
Note: Disassembling the chair yourself poses safety risks. It is recommended to contact a professional for handling first.
