Height of Plastic Office Chairs
Admin October 12, 2026
The height adjustment of plastic office chairs requires different methods depending on the chair type, specifically categorized into fixed-height and adjustable-height chairs.

Height Increase Solutions for Fixed-Height Plastic Office Chairs
Approximately 60% of plastic office chairs are manufactured with a fixed height that cannot be adjusted. If temporary height increase is needed, the following methods can be employed:
- Thickened Seat Cushion: Placing a moderately thick seat cushion (such as memory foam or high-density sponge material) on the chair surface can directly elevate the sitting posture by about 3-5 cm while enhancing comfort.
- Rubber Foot Covers: Attaching universal rubber foot covers of model T25 (available at hardware stores) to the bottom of the chair legs can increase the overall height by raising the contact point with the ground. It is important to select foot covers that match the diameter of the chair legs to prevent wobbling.
- Emergency Modification: Some users attempt to wrap electrical tape around the support column to increase height, but the number of layers must be strictly controlled (recommended not to exceed 3 layers). Otherwise, the chair's stability may decrease due to a shift in the center of gravity, posing a risk of tipping over.
Operation Methods for Adjustable-Height Plastic Office Chairs
For chairs with adjustment capabilities, the operation method should be selected based on the design type:
- Lever Adjustment/Rotary Knob: Modern plastic office chairs are typically equipped with a disc-shaped adjuster at the bottom. Users can pull the adjustment lever or rotate the lift knob beneath the seat while pressing down on both sides of the seat to raise the seat surface and complete the height adjustment.
- Modification of Old-Style Hard Plastic Chairs: If the chair has an old-style design, the base screws need to be unscrewed with a screwdriver, and a PVC pipe with positioning holes (length selected according to needs) should be installed on the support column. Height extension is achieved by fixing it through the positioning holes.
Adjustment Precautions
- Material Compression Limit: The load-bearing capacity of plastic materials decreases as the height increases. According to laboratory data from a certain brand, when the seat surface is raised more than 5 cm above the original height, the load-bearing capacity of the support column decreases by about 40%. Therefore, excessive adjustment should be avoided.
- Regular Inspection for Wear: It is recommended to inspect the wear of the chair joints, especially the spliced structural parts, every quarter. Although chairs made of new modified polypropylene material are more durable, they still need to comply with the stated adjustment range, and forced modification is prohibited.
- Safe Usage Principles: During adjustment, ensure that the chair is placed on a flat surface to avoid a shift in the center of gravity due to height changes. If the chair shows cracks or abnormal noises, it should be immediately stopped from use and replaced.
