Color Fading of Plastic Office Chairs

Admin October 14, 2026

There are multiple ways to repair the color fading of plastic office chairs, and the appropriate method should be selected based on the degree of color fading and the material properties.

Analysis of Color Fading Causes

The color fading of plastic office chairs is usually caused by light exposure, temperature changes, daily friction, or contact with chemicals. In professional testing, the essence of color fading is insufficient coating adhesion, leading to paint film peeling or pigment particle shedding. For example, after long-term exposure to wind and sun, the molecular structure of thermoplastic materials can be damaged, resulting in pits and uneven color on the surface.

Repair Methods

1. Minor Color Fading Treatment

  • Repair with Plastic-Specific Paint: After cleaning the faded area, evenly apply plastic-specific paint of the same color and allow it to dry and cure. This method is suitable for small-area repairs, is easy to operate, and has relatively strong adhesion.
  • Cover with Colored Crayons: Select a crayon close in color to the chair and gently apply it to the faded area. Crayons are soft and suitable for smooth surfaces, but be careful to avoid excessive friction that may cause secondary color fading.
  • Emergency Repair with Nail Polish: If the surface is smooth, you can apply nail polish of an appropriate color. Nail polish dries quickly but has poor durability, making it suitable for temporary concealment.

2. Severe Color Fading Treatment

  • Overall Repainting:
    • Prepare paint suitable for plastic materials and first sand the furniture surface to increase the adhesion of the paint layer.
    • In a well-ventilated environment, spray multiple times according to the paint instructions until the color is uniform. This method is suitable for large-area color fading, but be careful to ensure an even paint thickness to avoid runs.

3. Cover with Stickers or Films

Select stickers or films that match the original color or style and carefully paste them on the faded area. This method can quickly change the appearance and also provide protection, suitable for users who do not want complex operations.

4. Special Treatment for Thermoplastic Materials

If the chair is made of thermoplastic materials and the color fading is caused by wind and sun exposure, you can use a hot air gun or hairdryer (with the temperature controlled at around 140ยฐC) to evenly move and heat the surface. The high temperature will rearrange the damaged molecular structure, restoring an even color. However, note the following:

  • It is essential to confirm that the material is thermoplastic plastic (such as PE, PP, PVC, etc.), otherwise, it may deform or release harmful substances.
  • Avoid heating the same area for a long time to prevent local overheating and damage.

Precautions

  • Before repairing, clean the surface to remove dust and oil stains to ensure that the repair materials adhere firmly.
  • Chemicals (such as alcohol and solvents) may accelerate color fading, so avoid contact after repair.
  • If you cannot confirm the material or the cause of color fading is complex, it is recommended to consult a professional repair technician.
