PJ Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

The PJ Office Chair, also known as the Chandigarh Chair, is a representative of classic furniture design from the mid-20th century, combining practicality with artistic value.

Design Background and Intent

The PJ Office Chair was designed by Swiss-born designer Pierre Jeanneret in the 1950s for Chandigarh, India. At the time, Chandigarh, as India's first planned city, required a large number of practical furniture pieces to meet the needs of its citizens. Jeanneret, guided by the philosophy of 'designing for the common man,' created this chair by considering the local climate and material characteristics. Initially, it was widely used in the administrative offices of the Capitol Complex in Chandigarh and later expanded to public spaces and home settings.

Materials and Craftsmanship

The chair is crafted from Burmese teak and natural rattan weaving. Teak is known for its hardness, corrosion resistance, and natural moisture and insect resistance, making it suitable for India's monsoon climate. The rattan weaving, made from locally sourced natural rattan, forms the seat and backrest through hand weaving, ensuring breathability and ergonomic support. This combination of materials not only reflects the rational use of natural resources but also gives the chair a unique texture and appearance.

Structural Features

The PJ Office Chair features an inverted V-shaped leg structure as its core design. The four legs slope outward to form a stable triangular support, distributing weight without the need for additional crossbeams, saving materials while enhancing structural strength. The backrest and seat have a slight curve that conforms to the human body, improving comfort during prolonged sitting. The overall design is simple, with geometric lines contrasting sharply with natural materials, showcasing the aesthetic pursuit of modernist design.

Historical Significance and Revival

Although the PJ Office Chair was temporarily abandoned in the mid to late 20th century due to changes in design preferences, it has recently regained attention with the revival of the 'Mid-Century Modern' style. Designers and collectors admire its 'form follows function' philosophy and Jeanneret's respect for local culture and the environment. Today, original Chandigarh Chairs have become sought-after collectibles in the auction market, while replicas are widely used in modern homes and office spaces, symbolizing classic design.
