Ordinary Office Chair with Wheels
Admin October 19, 2026
The core method for adding wheels to an ordinary office chair is to install compatible casters, with the following specific steps:

1. Material Preparation and Compatibility Check
- Caster Selection: Prioritize using swivel casters with self-tapping screws (such as silent rubber casters), ensuring that each caster can bear a weight of โฅ40kg to support daily use. If the chair legs are made of metal, prepare additional matching screws; for wooden or plastic legs, the self-tapping screws can be directly fixed.
- Tool Preparation: In addition to the caster set, prepare a screwdriver (Phillips or flat-head, depending on the type of self-tapping screw) and a measuring tape (for measuring the distance between chair legs to ensure symmetrical caster installation).
- Compatibility Check: Measure the bottom dimensions of the chair legs to confirm that the diameter of the caster base matches the legs, preventing the casters from protruding or interfering after installation.
2. Removal of Original Components
- Turn the chair upside down with the legs facing up and place a soft cloth underneath to prevent scratches on the surface.
- The original plastic pads are usually fixed to the bottom of the chair legs with self-tapping screws. Use a screwdriver to rotate counterclockwise and remove the self-tapping screws, keeping the screws for later use (if the casters come with their own screws, this step can be skipped).
3. Installation of Casters
- Marking Positions: Use a measuring tape to measure the four corners at the bottom of the chair legs and mark the center positions for the casters, ensuring that the four casters are arranged in a rectangular pattern to prevent the chair from wobbling due to misalignment.
- Securing the Casters: Align the center hole of the caster with the marked point, insert the self-tapping screw vertically, and rotate it clockwise until the caster base is tightly against the chair leg.
- If the chair leg material is hard (such as metal), drill a hole (with a diameter slightly smaller than the screw) at the marked point before inserting the screw for fixation;
- For soft materials (such as wood), the self-tapping screw can be directly inserted.
- Checking Stability: After installation, gently shake the casters by hand to confirm that there is no looseness or wobbling, and tighten all the fixing screws.
4. Testing and Adjustment
- Function Testing: Turn the chair upright, gently push it to observe if the movement is smooth and if the casters rotate flexibly; sit on the chair and move slowly to check the load-bearing stability.
- Problem Handling:
- If there is stuttering or abnormal noise, re-tighten the screws or replace the casters;
- If the chair moves in a skewed direction, adjust the installation angle of the casters (such as slightly rotating the caster base) or replace them with casters that distribute the load more evenly to solve the problem.
Precautions: After modification, avoid using the chair on uneven or slippery surfaces to prevent the casters from getting stuck or slipping; regularly check the wear of the casters and replace aging components in a timely manner. After installing swivel casters, the office chair can rotate 360ยฐ freely, easily cope with movement in various directions, reduce invalid standing-up times by 70%, and improve office flexibility and efficiency.
