Lowering Ordinary Office Chairs

Admin October 11, 2026

Lowering the height of ordinary office chairs can usually be achieved through the following three methods:

1. Pneumatic Rod Adjustment
The pneumatic rod is the most common lifting device in modern office chairs, and its principle is to adjust the height through internal high-pressure gas. When operating, ensure that the chair is in a seated position. After sitting on the chair, press down on the adjustment handle located below the chair with one hand. At this point, the chair will slowly descend under the action of air pressure. After releasing the handle, the chair will be fixed at the current height. Note that if the handle is pressed when the chair is unoccupied, it may not descend or may descend too quickly due to the lack of gravity assistance, posing a safety hazard. Some pneumatic rods have a locking function and need to be unlocked before adjustment.

2. Conventional Chassis Lifting Method
This method is suitable for office chairs with traditional mechanical chassis. When adjusting, maintain a seated position, keep your back against the chair back, and pull up the adjustment lever below the seat with one hand. At this point, the human body's gravity will act on the chassis through the lever principle, causing the chair to slowly descend. During the operation, maintain body stability to avoid the chair tilting due to a shift in the center of gravity. After descending to the target height, release the adjustment lever to lock the position. This method places high demands on the mechanical structure of the chassis, and long-term use may lead to poor adjustment due to wear and tear.

3. Wired Chassis Lifting Method
Office chairs equipped with wired control devices usually integrate the control wire or buttons on the side or below the seat. When adjusting, maintain a seated position and pull up the control wire or continuously press the button with your fingers. The chair will descend at a constant speed. Some wired control systems support multi-level height adjustment, and the target position needs to be confirmed according to the indicator lights or markings. The advantage of wired chassis is convenient operation, but it is necessary to regularly check whether the cable connections are secure to avoid functional failures due to poor contact.

Precautions:

  • Before adjustment, confirm that the chair's load-bearing capacity does not exceed the rated value (usually marked on the pneumatic rod or chassis). Overloading may cause adjustment failure or component damage.
  • During the descent process, avoid suddenly releasing your hand or quickly releasing the adjustment device to prevent the chair from rebounding or suddenly dropping due to inertia.
  • If the chair has not been used for a long time or experiences adjustment stuttering, first apply even pressure to the seat surface (such as standing and stepping on it) before attempting to adjust it to help the pneumatic rod or mechanical structure reset.
  • Regularly check whether the surface of the pneumatic rod has air leaks, rust, or deformation. If any abnormalities are found, stop using it immediately and contact a professional for repair.
