Ordinary Office Chair Height Adjustment

Admin October 12, 2026

The most common type of height adjustment for ordinary office chairs is pneumatic height adjustment, which achieves height regulation through the movement of the piston rod inside the cylinder. It has the characteristics of low cost and flexible operation, but attention should be paid to the safety risks of inferior products.

Pneumatic height-adjustable chairs are currently the most mainstream type of height-adjustable chairs in office settings. Their core principle is to use high-purity nitrogen and other inert gases filled in the cylinder as the power source. When the user triggers the piston movement through the adjustment lever under the seat, the gas in the cylinder is compressed or released, pushing the piston rod to extend or retract, thereby raising or lowering the seat. For example, the JD Z5 Pro ergonomic chair uses a 4-stage pneumatic rod to achieve more precise height adjustment through step-by-step regulation. This design has a simple structure, requiring only a cylinder, a piston rod, and a control valve to function. Therefore, the manufacturing cost is relatively low, and users can complete the height adjustment operation simply by lightly pressing the adjustment lever, making it significantly more flexible than traditional mechanical height-adjustable chairs.

The popularity of pneumatic height-adjustable chairs is closely related to their cost advantages. According to industry statistics, more than 80% of office buildings and companies choose this type of height-adjustable chair, mainly due to its high cost-effectiveness and low maintenance costs. High-purity nitrogen, as the power medium, has the characteristics of stable chemical properties and is not flammable or explosive, providing relatively high safety under normal temperatures and usage frequencies. However, it is particularly important to note that if there are defects in the manufacturing process of the pneumatic rod (such as uneven wall thickness or poor sealing), or if the gas filled in the cylinder has insufficient purity (mixed with active gases like oxygen), when frequent height adjustments cause the temperature inside the cylinder to rise or when the chair is exposed to high temperatures for a long time (such as direct sunlight), the gas pressure may increase abnormally, leading to the risk of cylinder explosion. Although the probability of such accidents is relatively low, the consequences are severe. Therefore, when purchasing, priority should be given to products that have passed international safety certifications (such as BIFMA and SGS), and violent use or unauthorized disassembly of the pneumatic rod should be avoided.

In daily use, it is recommended that users avoid continuously adjusting the seat height for long periods to reduce friction and heat generation inside the cylinder. If the seat height adjustment is stuck, there is a hissing sound indicating air leakage, or the adjustment lever is loose, the user should immediately stop using the chair and contact after-sales service for inspection and repair. Through proper use and regular maintenance, pneumatic height-adjustable chairs can provide a safe and comfortable office experience for a long time.
