Height Adjustment of Ordinary Office Chairs

Admin October 11, 2026

The following are the main steps for adjusting the height of an ordinary office chair:

Step 1: Locate the Hand Control Device
If you are already seated in the chair, you can adjust the height by pulling up the control lever. Some models may require turning a knob instead of pulling a lever. If you are unsure about the function of a specific lever, you can first read the chair's instruction manual or try each lever one by one to confirm its height adjustment function. For example, the lever on some pneumatic lift chairs needs to be pulled up to raise the seat and pressed down to lower it; while traditional mechanical office chairs may achieve fine height adjustments by rotating a knob.

Step 2: Adjust the Seat Height
When operating, keep the movements gentle, moving only a few centimeters at a time to avoid damaging the pneumatic rod or causing the seat to become unbalanced due to rapid lifting or lowering. Continuously observe the comfort level during the adjustment process until you find a suitable position, and then return the control lever or knob to its original position to lock the height. For pneumatic models, precise adjustments can be made by repeatedly pushing the lever up and down, but be mindful not to make overly large movements in a single operation.

Step 3: Adjust Using a Standing Position
If it is difficult to adjust while seated, you can try operating from a standing position: Adjust the chair height so that the front edge of the seat is just below your knees. When you sit down, your feet should be able to rest flat on the ground with your thighs and calves in a natural bent position. If your feet cannot touch the ground, you can add a footrest under your feet; if your legs are still being pressed by the front edge of the chair after adjustment, it means the height is insufficient and needs to be raised further.

Office Chair Height Standards and Fitting Principles
According to ergonomic standards, the height range of office chairs is usually 40-50 centimeters. When fitting, the following conditions should be met:

  • Feet Steadily on the Ground: When seated, the soles of your feet should be in full contact with the ground to avoid poor blood circulation in the legs due to suspension.
  • Thigh Space Fitting: There should be enough space under your thighs to easily fit the thickness of a palm. If the space is too small, it means the chair is too high and the height needs to be lowered; if your legs are being pressed by the front edge of the chair, the height needs to be raised.
  • Dynamic Adjustment: Using the same height for a long time can lead to fatigue. It is recommended to dynamically fine-tune the seat height according to work scenarios (such as typing or reading) to maintain the natural curvature of the spine.

Handling Special Situations
If the chair cannot be adjusted in height due to aging or a malfunction, you can check whether the pneumatic rod is leaking air or whether the control device is stuck, or contact after-sales service for repair. For fixed office chairs without height adjustment functions, you can indirectly improve sitting comfort by adjusting the height of the desk or using seat cushions and footrests.
