Disassembly of Ordinary Office Chair

Admin October 22, 2026

The disassembly of an ordinary office chair can be carried out according to the following steps, with attention paid to operational safety and tool usage specifications:

1. Preparation before Disassembly and Component Identification
An office chair typically consists of components such as chair legs, casters, a base, a seat, a gas lift, a backrest, armrests, and a headrest. Before disassembly, it is necessary to identify the connection methods of each component, such as screw fixation, snap-fit connections, or pneumatic structures. If the gas lift and chair legs are tightly fastened due to long-term use, it is not recommended to forcibly disassemble them unless absolutely necessary to avoid damaging components or causing safety hazards.

2. Backrest Separation
The backrest is usually connected to the seat via screws or snap-fit mechanisms. Use a screwdriver of the corresponding type (e.g., Phillips or flat-head) to loosen the fixing screws by turning them counterclockwise. For snap-fit structures, use a plastic pry bar or a flat tool to gently pry along the seam to avoid scratching the seat surface. After separation, place the backrest in a safe location to prevent bumps.

3. Disassembly of the Base and Gas Lift

  • Base Separation: Raise the gas lift to its highest position, hold the seat with one hand, and press the height adjustment lever with the other hand while shaking it left and right to loosen the base from the gas lift using inertia. If the connection is too tight, gently tap the edge of the seat to assist in separation.
  • Gas Lift Removal: Invert the chair legs and use a rubber mallet to strike the top of the gas lift vertically (if a rubber mallet is not available, place a wooden board between the gas lift and chair legs for cushioning). Strike with even force to avoid the gas lift rebounding or the chair legs deforming. If the gas lift is severely rusted, spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) and wait for 5 minutes before proceeding.

4. Disassembly of Other Components

  • Armrests and Headrest: Most armrests are fixed to the sides of the seat with screws; simply turn the screws counterclockwise to remove them. If the headrest is adjustable, locate the adjustment button or snap-fit mechanism, press it, and lift the headrest upwards to separate it.
  • Casters and Chair Legs: Casters are usually fixed to the chair legs via snap-fit mechanisms or screws. For snap-fit types, simply pull them out with force; for screw types, use a screwdriver to remove them. If the casters do not rotate smoothly, clean the wheel axles before disassembly.

5. Precautions

  • Safety First: Wear gloves when disassembling the gas lift to prevent metal cuts; avoid piercing the gas lift with sharp tools if it contains high-pressure gas.
  • Tool Matching: Use a screwdriver that matches the screw type to avoid stripping the screws; ensure the tool is perpendicular to the component when striking to reduce the risk of deviation.
  • Categorized Storage: Store small parts such as screws and snap-fit mechanisms by component to avoid loss or confusion.

If reassembly is required after disassembly, it is recommended to follow the reverse order and check each component for wear, replacing aged parts (such as gas lifts and casters) in a timely manner to ensure safety.
