Disassembly of Ordinary Office Chairs
Admin October 16, 2026
The disassembly of ordinary office chairs should be carried out step by step, with attention to safety precautions, as detailed below:

I. Preparation Before Disassembly
- Tool Preparation: Prepare screwdrivers (Phillips/flat-head), a rubber mallet, soft cloth, neutral detergent (for cleaning wheels), and lubricant (such as WD-40).
- Environmental Safety: Choose a flat surface to prevent the chair legs from sliding; if the chair needs to be inverted, ensure there are no sharp objects nearby.
- Component Identification: An ordinary office chair typically consists of chair legs, wheels, a base, a seat, a gas lift, a backrest, armrests, and a headrest. Before disassembly, identify how each component is connected (e.g., screwed or snapped together).
II. Disassembly Steps
- Backrest Separation
- Locate the connection point between the backrest and the seat (usually at the rear or sides of the seat). Use a screwdriver to loosen the fixing screws.
- If the screws are rusty, apply a small amount of lubricant to aid in removal; store the screws safely after separation to avoid loss.
- Base Disassembly
- Raise the gas lift to its highest position to increase operating space.
- Hold the seat firmly with one hand and press the height adjustment lever (located beneath the seat) with the other hand while rocking the base side to side until it loosens and can be removed.
- Note: If the base is tightly connected to the gas lift, place a soft cloth underneath and gently tap the edge of the base with a rubber mallet to assist in separation.
- Gas Lift Disassembly
- Invert the chair legs (wheels facing up) and use a rubber mallet (or a wooden board as a cushion) to strike the top of the gas lift vertically from the center of the chair legs.
- Apply even force when striking to prevent the gas lift from tilting and damaging internal components; if stuck, apply lubricant and repeat the operation.
- Wheel Disassembly
- Snap-fit Wheels: Grasp the wheel bracket with your hands and pull outward evenly; if stuck, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth to gently pry open the snap-fit edge.
- Threaded Wheels: Simply rotate the wheels to remove them.
- Cleaning Wheels: After disassembly, clean hair and debris, scrub with neutral detergent, and apply lubricant after drying before reinstalling.
III. Precautions
- Safety Precautions:
- When disassembling the gas lift and chair legs, avoid excessive force that may cause parts to fly off and injure people; chairs that have been used for a long time may have rusted or worn connections that are stuck, requiring patience during operation.
- Do not forcibly pull on stuck wheels to avoid damaging the snap-fits or bearings.
- Component Storage:
- Store disassembled screws and small parts separately (e.g., in small containers) to avoid loss or confusion.
- Ensure cleaned wheels are completely dry before reinstalling to prevent dilution of the lubricant or attraction of dust.
- Handling Special Situations:
- If the gas lift cannot be disassembled, it may be due to unreleased internal pressure; contact a professional for handling; do not attempt to disassemble the internal structure of the gas lift yourself to prevent the danger of high-pressure gas ejection.
