Recoloring of Orange Office Chairs

Admin October 22, 2026

Recoloring an orange office chair requires following standardized procedures to ensure both effectiveness and safety. The specific steps are as follows:

I. Preliminary Inspection and Grading

  1. Structural Reliability Check: Press the backrest and seat, shake the chair legs, and inspect for issues such as loose connections, frame cracks, and hardware corrosion. Distinguish between real wood warping due to moisture, the degree of metal corrosion, and plastic brittleness cracks, marking damage to support and decorative parts.
  2. Surface Damage Inspection: Orange materials are prone to fading, so check if the sunlit surfaces appear gray or lighter. For painted models, distinguish between clear coat scratches, colored paint scrapes, or overall color shifts; for upholstered models, inspect for stains, snags, or foam collapse; for plastic models, check for surface dullness or aging brittleness.
  3. Usage Scenario Suitability: Clarify the chair's subsequent use (indoor home, commercial reception, or outdoor exposure) and confirm requirements for material environmental friendliness, wear resistance, and waterproof/sunproof properties.
  4. Damage Level Classification:
    • Minor Damage: The structure is intact, with only surface stains or slight scratches.
    • Moderate Damage: Local color paint peeling, small-area wear on upholstery, or individual loose hardware components.
    • Severe Damage: Frame cracking or deformation, large-area damage to upholstery, foam collapse, or extensive paint peeling.

II. Material and Tool Preparation

  1. Color Matching: Take color samples from concealed areas such as the lower edge of the backrest or the bottom of the chair legs for comparison. Orange has high saturation, and a 5% difference in pigment ratio can result in noticeable color discrepancies, so ensure the touch-up color matches the original chair.
  2. Upholstery Fabric Selection: Choose a fabric with a weight of no less than 300g to prevent the orange color from appearing dirty due to the underlying foam showing through.
  3. Outdoor Material Selection: Prioritize orange fabrics with anti-UV coatings or weather-resistant aliphatic polyurethane paints to reduce fading from sunlight exposure.
  4. Tool Preparation: Environmentally friendly water-based paint (low odor), 200-400 grit fine sandpaper, cloths, masking tape, and old newspapers (for floor protection).

III. Recoloring Process (Using Spray Paint or Water-Based Paint as an Example)

  1. Preparation:
    • Choose a well-ventilated outdoor area or balcony with a temperature of 15-25ยฐC and humidity below 60% to prevent paint cracking.
  2. Surface Preparation:
    • Clean dust and grease with a damp cloth, using alcohol or white vinegar for stubborn stains.
    • Sand the surface (especially smooth paint or metal) with fine sandpaper to enhance adhesion, then wipe away dust.
    • Protect metal connectors and fabric parts (if retaining them) with masking tape.
  3. Spray Painting:
    • Shake the spray paint can for 1-2 minutes to mix thoroughly. Hold it 20-30 cm from the surface and spray in a 'Z' pattern at a steady speed, applying thin layers to prevent runs. Wait 15-20 minutes between coats, applying 2-3 coats in total.
    • After the final coat, ventilate for 4-6 hours (water-based paint dries faster) and avoid touching.

IV. Precautions

  1. Material Suitability: Use specialized paint for wood, rust-resistant paint for metal, and specialized dye for fabric (test colorfastness first).
  2. Safety Precautions: Wear a mask and gloves, keep away from open flames, and prevent spray paint cans from overheating and exploding.
  3. Drying and Maintenance: Avoid placing weight on the chair for 24 hours after drying. Clean daily with a dry cloth and avoid prolonged contact with wet cloths on the painted surface.
  4. Leather Recoloring: Purchase sufficient paint in one go, as applying it in two sessions can affect the results.
  5. Dust-Free Environment: Avoid dust during application to prevent an uneven, grainy surface.
