Disassembly of Old-Style Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

The disassembly of old-style office chairs should be carried out step by step according to their specific structures, with the core principle being to avoid violent disassembly that could damage components or cause personal injury. The specific methods are as follows:

  1. Basic Preparation and Chair Inversion
Invert the chair smoothly so that the seat faces downward and place it on a soft surface (such as a carpet) to prevent scratches on the seat or structural deformation caused by collisions with hard objects. If the chair has a rolling base, secure the wheels in advance to prevent sliding, and clear the surrounding space to ensure operational safety.

  2. Disassembly of Seat Cushion and Backrest Connection Components
Use the corresponding type of screwdriver (mostly Phillips or flat-head screwdrivers) to unscrew the fixing screws at the connection between the seat cushion and the backrest. If the screws are rusted due to long-term use, spray a small amount of rust remover (such as WD-40) and wait for 5-10 minutes before operating. The removed screws should be stored separately in small containers to avoid loss.

  3. Handling Armrest Structures
The armrests of most old-style office chairs are fixed to the sides of the chair body with hexagon socket screws. Use a hexagon socket wrench (usually 4mm or 5mm in size) to unscrew the screws counterclockwise, and be sure to save the screws and matching washers. If the armrests are connected to the chair body with snap fasteners, use a plastic pry bar to gently pry them apart along the seams to avoid scratching the surface with metal tools.

  4. Separation of Gas Cylinder and Base
The gas cylinder and the base are usually connected by interference fit, and direct hard pulling may cause the gas cylinder to pop out and injure people. The correct method is to gently tap the side of the connection between the base and the seat cushion with a rubber mallet to gradually separate the two through vibration. If the gas cylinder and the base are stuck, place the chair upright, step on the base with your foot, and hold the seat cushion with both hands to shake it up and down to assist in separation.

  5. Handling Special Structures

    • Folding Chairs: First, find the connecting screws hidden in the seams of the folding structure and unscrew them with the corresponding type of screwdriver. If the folding part is fixed with rivets, use a small drill bit (2-3mm in diameter) to drill off the head of the rivet, and then use needle-nose pliers to pull out the remaining part.
    • Chairs with Electrical Components (such as Massage Chairs): Before disassembly, be sure to unplug the power cord and avoid the motor and wiring parts. When disassembling, mark the connection positions of the wires to avoid breaking them. If the motor needs to be removed, first loosen the fixing screws and then gently pull out the plug. Do not pull directly on the wires.

Precautions: Wear gloves during the disassembly process to prevent scratches. If you encounter components that cannot be disassembled (such as a rusted gas cylinder), it is recommended to contact professional maintenance personnel for handling to avoid safety hazards caused by forced destruction.
