Old Office Chair Upholstery Renovation
Admin October 22, 2026
Renovating the upholstery of an old office chair requires selecting the appropriate method based on the chair type (regular office chair or mesh chair). The specific steps are as follows:

I. Renovation of Regular Office Chair Upholstery
Material and Tool Preparation
- Material Selection: Microfiber leather (durable and easy to maintain, recommended for home use), PU leather, genuine leather, or linen (breathable). Allow for extra material: multiply the area of the seat cushion and backrest by 1.3 to avoid insufficient cutting.
- Tool List: Screwdriver, staple remover, scissors, flat-head hammer, electric drill (for removing dowel pins), hot glue gun, staple gun (or hand-sewing needle and thread); if the foam is collapsed, prepare 2-3 cm thick high-resilience foam.
Disassembly and Documentation
- Structural Documentation: Take photos of the original structure before renovation, especially the way the upholstery is wrapped and the positions of the staples.
- Disassembly Steps:
- Use a screwdriver to remove the chair legs, then use a staple remover to pry open the staples holding the old upholstery in place, avoiding damage to the wooden frame.
- Keep the old upholstery as a cutting template, use a marker to draw lines along the outline, leaving a 3-5 cm allowance for edge wrapping.
- If the foam is aged, remove it and cut new foam to the original dimensions for replacement.
Upholstery Installation
- Foam Fixation: Use hot glue to attach the new foam to the frame, and proceed to the next step after the glue dries.
- Upholstery Installation:
- Align the cut new upholstery in position, flatten it from the center to the sides, and use a staple gun to fix a staple every 2-3 cm on the back of the frame.
- Fixation order: start with the midpoints of the long sides, then the diagonals, to avoid wrinkles; fold or cut small slits at the corners to ensure flatness; for curved backrests, tighten and staple while pulling to keep the grain straight.
- Use a hammer to flatten the staples, and finally reattach the chair legs.
Construction Details
- Tension Control: Press the upholstery with the palm of your hand; it should be elastic but not tight, avoiding wrinkles from being too loose or cracking from being too tight.
- Edge Wrapping: Wrap the lower edge of the seat and the bottom of the backrest with staples, cover exposed staple heads with matching leather patches; check for protruding staples to prevent skin scratches; for old-style dowel pin chairs, use an electric drill to remove old dowel pins, replace with new dowel pin caps, or switch to self-tapping screws.
II. Renovation of Mesh Chair Upholstery
Preparation
- Tools and Materials: Needle-nose pliers, scissors, utility knife, soft tape measure (for measuring seat dimensions), breathable mesh fabric (thickness 0.8-1.2 mm), work gloves.
- Disassembly Documentation: Take photos of the original structure, keep intact plastic clips during reverse disassembly, and clean the metal frame.
New Upholstery Installation
- Temporary Fixation: Use clips to fix the corners of the mesh fabric, and check for even tension.
- Tightening and Fixation: Gradually tighten the mesh fabric from the center to the sides, trim the edges after leaving a 2-3 cm allowance; fix with nylon cable ties or professional upholstery staples, maintaining a spacing of 8-10 cm.
