Old Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

When an office chair is too old, you can choose to resell it, refurbish it, or dispose of it based on its specific condition, or reduce procurement costs by trading in the old chair for a new one.

If the chair is generally in good condition, such as having smooth height adjustment, flexible wheel rotation, and no significant damage to the backrest, reselling it should be a priority. Especially for branded used chairs in good condition, their resale value in the second-hand market is usually much higher than if they were disposed of as scrap. For example, some branded office chairs can be sold for 30%-50% of their original price on second-hand platforms, which not only reduces resource waste but also recovers some costs.

If the chair only has minor issues, such as stiff wheels, loose armrests, or surface wear, it can be refurbished by purchasing replacement parts. For example, replacing the wheels with silent ones can solve the problem of moving noise, and upgrading to adjustable armrests can enhance comfort. Such refurbishments are relatively low-cost, usually only requiring a few tens to a hundred yuan, and are simple to perform without the need for professional tools. This not only extends the chair's lifespan but also avoids the high cost of replacing it with a new one.

If the chair poses safety hazards, such as a cracked frame, a leaking or deformed gas lift, it should be disposed of immediately. The gas lift is a core safety component of an office chair, and if it ages or becomes damaged, it could cause the chair to suddenly drop or even explode, seriously threatening the user's safety. Such chairs should not be used further, nor should they be repaired by oneself. Instead, they should be handled by professional recycling agencies to prevent them from entering the second-hand market and causing secondary harm.

Additionally, if a company or organization needs to replace office chairs, they can trade in the usable old chairs to offset the cost of purchasing new ones. Some suppliers offer trade-in services where the residual value of the old chairs can be directly deducted from the cost of the new ones, significantly reducing procurement costs compared to selling all the old chairs as scrap and then buying new ones at full price. For example, 10 old chairs might only fetch 200 yuan if sold as scrap, but through a trade-in, they could offset more than 1000 yuan, showing a clear cost advantage.

In summary, the disposal of old office chairs should be evaluated based on safety, economy, and environmental protection to avoid losing more than necessary or wasting resources excessively.
