Disassembly of Old Office Chairs
Admin October 12, 2026
The disassembly of old office chairs should be carried out step by step according to their specific structures, with the core principle being to avoid violent disassembly that could damage components or cause personal injury.

I. General Disassembly Preparations
- Environment and Tools: Place the chair upside down on a soft surface (such as a carpet) to avoid็ฃ็ขฐ (collisions) with hard objects; prepare an Allen wrench, a rubber mallet, a small drill bit (for rivet structures), and a small box (for storing screws and small parts).
- Safety Tips: If the chair is equipped with electrical components (such as electric height adjustment), unplug the power source first. During disassembly, avoid the motor and wiring areas to prevent breaking the wires.
II. Component Disassembly Steps
Separation of Seat Cushion and Backrest
- Locate the screws connecting the seat cushion and backrest (usually located beneath the backrest or at the edge of the seat cushion). Use the corresponding screwdriver to turn them counterclockwise and remove them, keeping the screws to prevent loss.
- If the connection features a snap-fit structure, use a plastic pry bar to gently pry open the snaps, avoiding scratches from metal tools.
Armrest Removal
- Most armrests are secured to the sides of the chair body with Allen screws. Use an Allen wrench to loosen the screws, then gently shake the armrests to detach them.
- If the armrests are integrally molded with the chair body (such as in plastic-welded structures), use a hot air gun to heat the connection area to soften the adhesive, then use a thin blade to separate them (this operation requires professional guidance to avoid burns).
Separation of Gas Cylinder and Base
- The gas cylinder and base are in an interference fit, so use a rubber mallet to gently tap the side of the connection between the base and the seat cushion to gradually loosen them.
- Do not pull directly: The gas cylinder is under high pressure internally, and forced separation could cause the cylinder toๅผนๅบ (eject) and injure someone or damage the internal structure.
- If the gas cylinder is rusted, spray a small amount of rust remover (such as WD-40) to assist in disassembly.
III. Handling Special Structures
Disassembly of Folding Chairs
- The connecting screws of folding chairs are usually hidden in the folding seams. First, unfold the chair and use a screwdriver to unscrew the hidden screws.
- If rivets are used for fixation, use a small drill bit (1-2mm in diameter) to drill off the head of the rivet, then use needle-nose pliers to remove the remaining part, being careful not to scratch the chair fabric or plastic shell.
Disassembly of Solid Wood Components (such as office chairs modified from solid wood dining chairs)
- The connections of solid wood components are mostly screw + dowel structures. First, unscrew the screws hidden on the inside of the chair legs or at the backrest, then use a rubber mallet to gently tap the abutment area of the dowels to slowly separate the two dowels.
- Force Control: Solid wood is brittle, and excessive tapping force can cause cracking. It is recommended to gradually increase the force from light to heavy.
IV. Post-Disassembly Handling
- Place all screws and small parts in a small box by category to avoid loss.
- If you wish to keep the chair, clean and maintain the disassembled components (such as applying lubricant to the gas cylinder and waxing the solid wood components).
- If you need to discard it, recycle by material type (metal, plastic, fabric, etc.) to reduce environmental pollution.
