Old Hongmu Office Chair Value
Admin October 10, 2026
The value of an old Hongmu office chair needs to be comprehensively evaluated based on its material, age, craftsmanship, and condition, with a wide price range from several thousand to tens of thousands of yuan.

I. Price Reference Range
- Recycling Market Prices: In Shanghai, the recycling price for ordinary old Hongmu chairs ranges from approximately 2,000 to 5,888 yuan per chair, depending on the material and condition. For high-end materials such as Laotian Dalbergia cochinchinensis, the recycling price for a complete set of imperial-style chairs can reach 28,900 yuan.
- Value of Republic-era Collectibles: Ordinary unmarked Hongmu seating furniture from the Republic era can be categorized into three price ranges based on material and craftsmanship:
- Low-end: Several thousand to 20,000 yuan, mostly made of ordinary materials or featuring simpler craftsmanship;
- Mid-range: 20,000 to 100,000 yuan, potentially involving classic shapes (such as official's hat chairs or round-back armchairs) or mid- to high-end materials (such as Dalbergia cochinchinensis);
- High-end: If crafted by renowned artisans, made of rare materials, or preserved in excellent condition with classic shapes, the value can be even higher.
II. Core Factors Affecting Value
- Material: High-end materials such as Dalbergia cochinchinensis and Laotian red sandalwood command significantly higher prices than ordinary Hongmu. If the material is high-quality old wood from the "old Hongmu" category (such as wood from trees over a hundred years old), the value further increases.
- Craftsmanship and Structure: Furniture with full mortise-and-tenon joints and no nails or glue can command a 40% premium. If it features complex craftsmanship such as hand-carving or inlay work, the value is even higher.
- Condition and Integrity: Intact, original Hongmu furniture is priced 2-3 times higher than restored pieces. If there is damage, replacement of parts, or later additions, the value significantly decreases.
- Age and Historical Significance: Office chairs from the Republic era or earlier, especially those with historical traces or cultural backgrounds, may exceed the value of ordinary collectibles.
III. Liquidation Channels and Precautions
- Professional Recyclers: Suitable for those needing quick liquidation, but be prepared to accept a 40%-55% discount from the retail market price.
- Online Auctions: Suitable for high-end collectibles, with a 15%-16% comprehensive fee after the sale, but potentially higher premiums.
- Consignment in Physical Stores: Higher commission rates (30%-50%), suitable for collectibles not urgently needed to be sold, but pay attention to the store's reputation.
Advice: For specific value assessment, contact a professional appraisal institution or refer to the transaction records of similar collectibles. Before selling, try to keep the furniture in its original condition to avoid value disputes caused by restoration.
