Is a Rattan Chair Suitable as an Office Chair?

Admin October 17, 2026

There are certain limitations to using a rattan chair as an office chair, and its suitability depends on the usage scenario and requirements. Here are its pros, cons, and usage suggestions:

Breathability and eco-friendliness are its core advantages. Rattan chairs are woven from natural rattan materials, offering excellent breathability. They can maintain air circulation even in high-temperature environments of 38ยฐC, preventing sweating. At the same time, rattan is biodegradable, aligning with eco-friendly concepts, and the overall weight is light, making it easy to move and adjust positions. Some high-end models, such as the Zhuzhanggui handmade rattan chair, use high-density weaving techniques to evenly distribute the pressure on the seat surface. Paired with a lumbar pillow design, it can provide basic lumbar support, making it suitable for short-term office work or leisure scenarios.

Insufficient support is the main drawback. Rattan is relatively soft in texture and is prone to sagging under long-term weight, resulting in a lack of firm support for the lower back. Studies have shown that when sitting for more than 30 minutes, the incidence of lower back pain among rattan chair users is significantly higher than that of those using ergonomic chairs with lumbar support. In addition, the backrests and seat cushions of rattan chairs usually lack adjustable functions, making it difficult to adapt to different body types or sitting postures, further limiting their suitability as office chairs.

Long-term office work requires careful selection. If you need to work at a desk for long periods, it is recommended to prioritize ergonomic chairs with adjustable lumbar support or adopt a combination of a hard-back circle chair and a lumbar pillow to distribute the pressure on the lumbar spine. If you insist on choosing a rattan chair, pay attention to the following three points:

  1. Choose a high-back model: The backrest height should at least cover the lower edge of the scapula to provide complete support for the upper body;
  2. Add auxiliary accessories: Equip it with a memory foam lumbar pillow and a hard seat cushion to compensate for the lack of support from the rattan material;
  3. Control usage time: It is recommended to sit for no more than 30 minutes at a time and get up regularly to relieve lower back fatigue.

Pay attention to the usage scenario and maintenance. Some brands, such as the Zhuzhanggui classic model, offer a 30-year warranty, but their designs are mainly for home leisure scenarios. Frequent moving or high-frequency use may accelerate the aging of the rattan material, leading to structural loosening or breakage. If the office environment requires frequent adjustment of the seat position, the durability of a rattan chair may not meet the requirements.
