Sleeping Side by Side on Office Chairs

Admin October 12, 2026

It is not advisable to put office chairs together and sleep side by side. The specific reasons and alternative suggestions are as follows:

Disadvantages of Sleeping on Joined Chairs

  1. Narrow and Uneven Space
Office chairs are originally designed to meet short-term sitting needs. Their backrests, armrests, and seats usually have height differences or rigid structures. When multiple chairs are joined together, noticeable gaps or protrusions form at the joints, preventing the body from lying flat during sleep. Continuous local pressure can lead to muscle fatigue or impaired blood circulation.

  2. Spinal Health Risks
The human spine needs to maintain its natural physiological curves (cervical lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, lumbar lordosis) when lying flat. When sleeping on joined chairs, due to space constraints, the body may be forced to curl up or twist, causing the spine to deviate from its neutral position. Over time, this can increase pressure on the intervertebral discs, potentially triggering issues such as lumbar disc herniation and cervical dislocation, especially for those with pre-existing spinal conditions.

  3. Risk of Local Cold Exposure
Office chair materials (such as mesh and leather) are highly breathable, and gaps easily form at the joints. During sleep, the body has a small contact area with the chair surface, leading to rapid heat loss. If the ambient temperature is low, exposed areas like the waist and back may experience muscle spasms due to cold exposure, further increasing the burden on the spine.

Alternative Suggestions

  1. Choose Reclining Office Chairs
Opt for adjustable executive chairs or ergonomic chairs. Their backrests can be reclined from 120ยฐ to 180ยฐ, and the seat and backrest are smoothly connected, providing support close to that of a bed. Some models also come with retractable footrests to further distribute body pressure.

  2. Use Folding Beds or Nap Mats
If space permits, place a lightweight folding bed. Its flat surface can fully conform to the body's curves. If space is limited, choose a thick nap mat (thickness โ‰ฅ 5cm), paired with a U-shaped pillow and a blanket, which can ensure comfort and be easily stored.

  3. Optimize Sleeping Posture
If you must take a short rest on an office chair, it is recommended to maintain a semi-reclined position (adjust the backrest to around 110ยฐ), place a cushion at the waist to maintain the physiological curve, bend your knees and elevate your legs (e.g., using a footrest) to reduce lumbar pressure. Also, control the rest time (recommended โ‰ค 30 minutes) to avoid staying in the same position for too long.
