Office Chair Yoga
Office chair yoga is a yoga practice designed for office workers who sit for long periods. It can relieve lower back pain, shoulder and neck stiffness, improve posture, and soothe the mind and body through simple movements.

Specific Movements and Key Points
- Occipital Resistance Stretch: Sit on one-third of the chair, interlace your fingers behind your head. As you inhale, resist with your occiput and palms, feeling the stretch in the front of your neck; as you exhale, lower your head and arch your back, practicing dynamically three times. This movement helps relieve neck muscle tension and improves cervical spine mobility.
- Side Waist Twist: Place your right hand on the outside of your left knee. As you inhale, push the ground with your sit bones and keep your pelvis stable; as you exhale, twist along your thoracic spine to the left rear, while keeping your spine extended and avoiding excessive arching of the lower back or shrugging. For the opposite side, place your left hand on the outside of your right knee and twist to the right. This movement relaxes the waist muscles and enhances spinal flexibility.
- Chair Back Side Stretch: Sit facing the back of the chair, grab the right side of the chair back with your left hand, and raise your right arm. As you exhale, lean your body to the left, feeling the stretch in your side waist; turn your head downward to enhance the stretch in the back of your neck. Be mindful of maintaining balance and avoiding excessive stretching that could lead to muscle strains.
- Forward Bend Relaxation: Sit on the front half of the chair, with your heels on the ground and your toes curled up, keeping your lower back elongated. Place your hands on your knees and slowly bend forward as far as you can, relaxing the muscles in your calves, thighs, and buttocks. During the movement, avoid bending your back and maintain the natural curve of your spine.
- Core Strengthening: Sit on one-third of the chair, lift your heels off the ground, and raise your knees. Alternately contract and straighten your legs, engaging your core muscles in the movement. This movement strengthens the abdominal and waist muscles and improves core muscle weakness caused by prolonged sitting.
Practice Precautions
When practicing, keep your spine extended and avoid arching your back; adjust the range of motion according to your own conditions to avoid excessive stretching or twisting; it is recommended to do 2-3 minutes of micro-movements every hour to relieve fatigue caused by prolonged sitting; avoid practicing twisting poses immediately after meals to prevent affecting digestion. Systematic reviews show that such practices can significantly improve musculoskeletal discomfort, psychological stress, and sleep quality in sedentary individuals.
